I went to a iffy Lube a couple years back to inquire about an oil filter on my cage. I ran into a child hood friend of mine working there who is a drug addict. He told me he was still using, and that was the only place he could find work with several drug convictions/ no drug testing. He also bragged about doing these exact same things as shown in the video. DIY
Its almost like a double con. Let alone are they convincing people that they need all this extra work that they dont, con 1. But then they don't even carry out the work that theyre conning you into buying, con 2.
con them ... no not really .. the fuel filter .. hes right .. its suppose to be done every 48 months or 60k miles .. what ever comes first .. just like your oil in your car .. its suppose to be changed every 3 months or 3k miles .. what ever comes first . i use to work at a Stealership .. ford to right :) . everyone there did there job .. that was the point was to "upsale" things that could .. everyone i seen when it came down to when the customer was paying for it out of there pocket we only suggested it if it was really needed ... i'v seen some nasty fuel filters in my 1 year there .. and these cars where no more then 2 years old most the time .. i was shocked .. but yes those Jeffy lube places are a stick in muddy water . there not worth a flip ! most of them are owner opperator that deal with the big ppl above .
Ya there is definitely a difference between dealerships and jiffy lube/econo oil places. Dealerships are high, but you get what you pay for (for the most part). But if you want piece of mind, then do it yourself.

you know those idiots at jiffy lube dont know how to work on cars.
THe thing is this.. they go by the stupid computer.. go fix this.. go sell this.. the problem is that they dont realise that to fix say the fuel filter.. like in my car (as that jeep) you got to lower the damn fuel tank to do that.
The tranny flush the funniest.. cause my car has a sealed IB5 tranny from ford. You cant change any fluids.. i remember the same guy below trying to tell me that my tranny fluid smelt funny, yeah right, there is no way to service that thing.. ford themselves told me that.. they got to take the frigging thing apart and replace fluids via the half shafts.
I remember the last time i went to jiffy lube, the idiot draiined the oil, then without putting a fuel filter on, started filling and then started teh engine (almost). I was watching.. i told him watch it.. then he apologized..
that was teh LAST time i used jiffy lube.. i prefer the dealer, it costs more but it gets done right.
really .. it dont cost that much more unless you tell them you want diffrent oil .. i know at the ford dealer here you would pay i like it was something like 25-28 bucks for an oil change in a gas car ..

I hate when they try to upsell crap to me at any shop. I know what I want and what I need. If I wanted it I would ask for it. The only reason I go to places like that is when it's a fix thats a pain in the a$$ or I don't have all the tools to do it. The one thing that pisses me off about shops, is when they wont install your own parts. I mean why buy them from you when I can get the hook up some where else. Oh yea I used to work at Big O Tires. I did all the crap work for the head mechanic. My store didn't cheat customers. I loved working on cars so I did my best on every thing I did. The whole crew was good at wrenching.
i worked for pepboys for about 1 year and i saw some pretty shady stuff as for me and another guy we did what we could to get the done and doen right yeah we always suggested extra stuff but that was for the customers saftey i did push them to buy or get it doen that same dya but when they had the extra money or in a certain amount of time. the one thing i pushed most was brakes a guy or gal would coem in getting 4 tires ok no problem once i got the tires off i checked the suspention and brakes and if they were low i would tell them, they would ask do i need them now or can i go a few more miles and if they could go another 1000 i would tell them yeah you can go for a bit longer but if not i would tell them they are gone to please replace them for your saftey sometimes they would sometimes they wouldnt its all up to them. ewverything i tried to upsale was for preventative maintnance and for saftey not for money. but jiffy lube and places like that dont have mechanics they have soem terns who want a job for some extra cash no proper training f' those places for making other small laces look bad :2guns:
once bought a car from two guys that had a 'dead battery'... duh. That should have been a tipoff. I took it to Les Schwab Tires, a chain in the NW here and I asked if it was the alternator. The guy tested it with the machine and said nope, it's just the battery, buy a new one for $45. So i did. Several weeks later the car wouldn't start again. Doh.
I went back with my receipt and they were like, "Oh. Uh, okay, there's nothing we can do."
Well. Now I go back to their garage to dump all my used oil. It's the least they can do.
What you guys need to do is...1) do it your damn self or 2) find a non-chain not-crooked small time garage
Yeah I'm lazy, but the garage I go to has little cameras sitting down in the bay so you can watch your car be worked on. Granted they say I need a 99.95 blah blah blah flush but I'm pretty good at saying no.
As with any service industry, find one, and build a relationship. I do most of my own work, but do go to one place I trust for things I don't feel like messing with or don't have the tools.
If a shop won't let you watch them do the work, don't let them do the work. Then if something isn't done, you can say right then that it wasn't done.
The shop I use, now does EVERYTHING. I don't nit pick them on price, they do great work that I trust. They do machine work on my engines, inspections on everything, and any other work that needs done on any vehicle. The last thing they did was replacing header studs on my vette. Had to put it on the lift and remove the whole exhaust. It cost me $400 to replace 6 studs, but if I had tried it at home, I would have broke them and would have ended up costing myself $1000 after I got ticked and broke more stuff. But on that job, I was under the car with them and saw everything, and knew exactly how much time was involved in replacing $10 worth of parts. But with all the business I've given them, when I pull up, they stop and make sure I'm taken care of.
i know most places dont let you stand under the cars but thats for saftey reasons. soem places do but im fine standing behind my car when its in the air. It is rair that i take anything to a shop but thats cause i have to pay money :cry: but if its something big like im going to put a new motor in my 86 trooper im going to take it to a shop i trust and have them do all the work then have them give me a warrenty the only down side to diy work is no warrenty on craftsmanship.
