Title: can fairings be fit to pre-'04 gs?
Post by: bwsmith on March 09, 2007, 02:37:31 AM

hi, all,

i am new to this forum.  i ride a cbr954rr, and my wife now wants a sport-type bike herself.  i like the gs's, but the fairings seem to be on the '04s and later.  i was hoping to get off cheaper, and did not want her to damage it while learning.  i suppose i could take them off while she is learning, but can the plastics be fitted to an earlier model of gs?

Not without work.

You'll have to drill holes in the frame so you can bolt up the mounting brackets, as well as weld a tab on the front steering head to hold the front fairing. Also, the bodywork would only match up with '01+ models.

It's much easier to get them to fit on '01-'03, but it's still work...  '89-'00 is harder, 'cause the seat and tank don't match up with the plastics...  And the '01+ seat and tank don't match up with the '89-'00 mounts...

In other words...  What Alpha said.   :icon_mrgreen:

Yes it can.   My old 1989 GS500 had '04 fairings on it.   The fab work for the brackets was done by Srinath.   I took a few photos of the brackets and things and made this post (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=25399.msg263490#msg263490)
