Title: Comprehensive Insurance
Post by: Alphamazing on March 10, 2007, 12:44:17 AM
The definition of Comprehensive Insurance Coverage is as follows:

QuoteComprehensive insurance covers loss or damage to your vehicle by most causes except those covered by Collision insurance.

What it covers

For example, Comprehensive insurance covers vehicle damage or loss from:

    * fire
    * theft (except by an employee or member of your household
    * vandalism
    * falling or flying objects, including rock or gravel damage to your windshield
    * malicious mischief
    * lightning
    * windstorm
    * earthquake
    * hail
    * impact with animals
    * missiles
    * riot
    * civil commotion
    * rising water
    * the stranding, sinking, burning, derailment, or collision of a conveyance transporting the vehicle on land or water

Because you just never know...

damage from nukular missiles or acts of war are generally not covered.   :cookoo:  so watch out.

Certainly they mean flying gravel style missiles.  If you read further, it's extremely unlikely that your insurance covers anything in the event of war, "declared of undeclared, civil or foreign."

Theres a cpl of air force bases in AZ. I was just thinking how much it would suck to go to your bike and in the middle of crater from a missile blast.  :laugh:

And deer too!   I hit a deer with the car and the damage was covered by the comprehesive rather than the collision ins.  Had zero comp deductible so it cost me zero of the $1500 damage.   :thumb:

I think deer fall under the "malicious mischief" caregory...

I'm a agent in NC. if you had missed the dear and hit the ditch collision would have covered it and your insurance would go up for three years.

always better to hit the dear, isn't that messed up.

Not the first, second or third time that i have heard that.  My dad nearly totaled a car i was trying to sell because he ran off the road avoiding a deer and smashed a tree instead.  luckily i had him add that car to his insurance since he was going to sell it in the city for me and i removed it from mine, had i not done that i would have had yet another accident on my record that didn't need to be there.

Interesting sidenote to missles ... if you throw a piece of paper (or anything) at a car while driving/riding in VA, it's considered a missle and you can be charged with a felony.  People have gone to jail for it ... one woman's conviction was just overturned.   :cookoo:

I mean, I guess technically it is correct...

Yeah .. but putting a mother in jail while her husband is in Iraq ... for throwing a half empty McDonald's cup at another car in stopped traffic ..... that's just stupid.

That's odd. So reporting something for collision makes your rates go up, but reporting something for comprehensive doesn't? Do you know the reasoning behind this?

Think about it.  If you have a wreck that's not your fault, the other guy's insurance pays for your damage.

If you have a wreck that is your fault, your collision pays for your damage.

If you hit a deer or your car is stolen, it's typically not your fault, and your comprehensive pays.

Collision makes your rates go up because it was your fault.
