I noticed on the picture board that alot of our European comrades have luggage racks on their GS's. Where can I get a GS500 luggage rack?
Do they sell them in the USA? Can I buy one from Europe? Does anyone have a used one for sale?

Go to the American Suzuki website and look for accessories for the GS500. Find the luggage rack and notice that they want $84.95 for it.
Then, go to ronayers.com.

I got some neat luggage stuff from Europe, but the company that I bought it from is no longer accepting orders. (The retailer, not the manufacturers.) See my Riderhaus page (http://www.bbburma.net/Riderhaus.htm).
Someone on the board located a company in the States that sells engine case guards made by Five Stars, the makers of my guards and luggage racks. I wonder if they could be persuaded to sell the Five Stars (Givi-compatible) racks as well? See Adventure Motorcycle Gear (http://www.adventuremotogear.com/).
Also, you might want to check out Ventura's "Aerodynamic Bike-Pack System" (http://www.ventura-bike.com/english/products/pack_system/index.html).
Oh, and one other thing: Try doing a search here on GStwin.com for "luggage". What you find may surprise you!

Suzuki makes one for 01-02 models, doesn't fit previous years. The European one doesn't seem available and both are a bit pricey, so I made my own.
Cost about $15 and a little of my time on a couple cold winter nights. Made of aluminum angle with stainless steel bolts and nuts. Working fine for about 3 years now.

You are right, there are loads of variations available from many European outlets. I have a Givi (Italiian) topbox on my GS mounted on a rack purchased cheaply from my local dealer. The rack would be a fairly simple piece of kit to make it mounts on the grab-bar bolts under the seat, fiddly and it obstructs the stowing of the tool kit. Have a look at motorcycle.co.uk which has loads of links for bits and bobs or GS500 community on "Bikers Vine" there is a link to the vine on this site. Pinch the best ideas and fabricate! It's worth it because when I park in town it's helmet on the seat-hook and leathers in the box.

I don't know what year your GS is or if this is what you're after, but there's a GIVI top box mounting rack on eBay right now for B-I-N of $50. That's less than half of a new one. Of course, it doesn't include a box but there's no reason you couldn't just use it as a luggage rack for now and you'd always have the option of adding a water tight, secure box later. FWIW

I made one too...Mine was made from aluminium pipe, welded to the sissy bar. It was made for a milk crate and supposed to be held on by zip ties.

I never made any sketches of it. Just got some .75x.75 light weight aluminum angle and made it. It's 6'' long and 10" wide on top. It's mounted completely to the passenger grab handle and can be removed by removing the handle with it's 2 mounting screws. The rack is held to the grab handle with three #10 screws that go through a piece of angle mounted to the top, then thru the grab handle, and two go thru the braces below the handle. Worked out very solid.
I only carry soft luggage full of clothes, gloves, etc on the rack when traveling. Light load. But one day a buddy lost a National Cycle quick detach saddle bag off his Valkyre when turning off the freeway and didn't notice it. I gathered it up and bungied it to my rack and hauled it home. A bit heavier than the 10# or so load usually recommended for racks.
