When i bought the bike it was the wrong key to begin with its a big key that sticks out of the ignition usually and i havent got around to replacing it. I pulled the broken key part out with twezers but i still need a new key now
next step is to ask the guru's here
WHAT CAN I DO, san diego weather is perfect and i cant ride
ill buy new everything ignition lock cylinder for gas tank but how do i get it to be a matching key setup again or is there anyway to fabric another key for my bike from the dealer possibly?4
thanks ahead of time for your input

If you brought that broken key into my lock shop, I could make you a new one. However, I would wonder what is causing your key to break? Is it a poor copy? Was the ignition changed and not perfectly matched to the existing key? The answer to your question is kind of long. If you believe that the bike is still keyed to the original key (ie everything matches, no signs of damage around locks), then the dealer can use your VIN to locate your original key code. They can then cut a key from that, or you can provide that code to a locksmith who can also cut you an original key.
As long a nothing has been changed, they key should work perfectly. I would take my broken key to a locksmith, and have a new one made. Then, I would take it home and try out the key. If it worked good, then I would have more made for spares. If it only worked OK, but would turn the ignition, I would ride the bike over, and have the lockmith fit the key by hand. If it didn't work at all, I would start the VIN trace process. Best of Luck.
Hi aplitz,
It's very cool to have a locksmith be part of our GS500 board. :)
Where are you located?
Thanks for your advice. It's helpful to all of us.
Best wishes,
Todd
if the key you had will tumble the lock, just put the broken piece back into the ignition and turn the bike on and off with a screwdriver. I would do this with most of my racebikes...snap the key off in the ignition. Nothing worse than not being able to get out of the pit when you're called because you can't find the damn key...

That method can cause problems on certain bikes. Not all keys for bikes are tip stopped, so breaking the key off could remove the shoulder, and allow the blade to slide too far into the lock. Its not rally a reliable way to deal with this situation, especially since he still needs the gas and seat lock. I think that race bike locks should be removed and bypassed alltogether (see youtube of wrx being towed by Range Rover, not the same but still a good exmple of what can happen when locks aren't treated correctly).
Todd. I am in Carson City, NV.
it looks like the key is an origional copy. its the same key between the tank and the ignition. The top of the key is bent and the bottem is stuck in there i will take it to a locksmith tomorrow to see what I can do. if they cant fix it i will find a suzuki dealer and see where i can go from there
thanks everyone
