Title: Bridges & strange fear/phobia
Post by: LMT on March 11, 2007, 10:22:46 AM
I have this apprehension of going under certain bridges due to a phobia of debris/rocks being thrown from above.  Is this strange and unlikely?  (Several yrs ago a person was killed on the OH Turnpike due to thrown asphalt...thugs never caught).

for me its Oranges.. there so damn smug with their orange skin and delicious juice.. but just you wait.. they'll have there revenge and when they do.. ..  .. I'll be safe in my orange proof bunker... sure it sounds crazy but just you wait man.. just you wait..

But seriously I havn't really thought about that.. ... UNTIL NOW..  THANKS ALLOT.  :icon_mrgreen: I have however thought about the walkways over the highway, but not until I saw a group of 3-4 kids standing up there... I knew they were plotting something.  So ya I try to look up, if even for a second to check it out.
I guess its not really a fear but I do hate when I see a large flock of birds/geese flying or sitting on the lines over me.. I really dislike getting sharted upon.

My biggest fear riding my gs is going over rr tracks.  I just know that one of the little gates is gonna come down and clothesline me one day... :dunno_white: :o

For me it's just traffic jams. I get paranoid in those so fast.

wussies...I'm afraid of nothing but human stupidity.  I don't like clowns...or carnies...though.  It's more of a "I'll kill you" don't like instead of an "eewww don't touch me" dislike.

Oh and billions of people drive through underpasses every day but only one guy a couple years ago succombed to thugs.  I think the odds are in your favor.  It's not like the odds of hitting the ground when your plane is crashing.

Ha ha.

When it was stormy out I was ultra paranoid about trees or tree limbs falling down... lots of trees fall in storms here.

Sounds like a fear that is way out of proportion to the likelihood of its occurrence. Make more sense to be cringing and whimpering every time you pass an SUV with someone talking on the cell phone and looking at a map.

I had that happen... kinda.  Leaving a parking ramp, the gate went up for me, but came down on top of my helmet.  I surprised me pretty good and broke my face shield latches, but overall I was ok.  The building owners' insurance cut me a check for a new helmet

My cousin was actaully almost killed a couple years back by chunk of cement that fell from a overpass, through her windshield and landed in the back seat of her car. They said that if it was only a couple inches over, it would have probably decapitated her. She now has a large scar from the glass and always has to wear turtle-necks.

So your fears are not unfounded . . . I dont like to think what that would do on a motorcycle . . . :icon_confused:

Probably, but you're not alone; after a couple well publicized incidences, the State of Oregon mandated that all freeway overpasses must have chainlink fencing to help prevent such deadly vandalism.

I have a fear of sheep, but I just go and do it.

Seriously.  Spiders are at the top of my list.  Then height.

The height issue is a problem, 'cause I wanna learn to fly and skydive.

Oh.. ok I just thought of something that scared the shart out of me.. I was riding down the highway and I see the sign "road construction ahead" followed by "grooved pavement: motorcycles use extreme caution"    :o  The grooves where parallel to the flow of traffic and my tires followed right along with them, acting on their own.  The back tire wanted to go left then right and the front wanted to go the opposite.  There was no shoulder to pull off on and the exit wasn't for another couple hundred feet.  I slowed way down and pulled to the right, but it was still scary as hell..   at that time I wish the gs had hazards cause I would have been flashing them.

  i work in downtown san rafael (ca) and have to park in a garage (never pay for parking though, i leave after 11pm every night so i don't even pay as a cage) and one of the turns i have to take has 3 manhole covers in quick succesion and i'd have to swing really wide to miss then, so i always cringe on those, and having to turn where there's painted lines and stuff and i have no choice but to cross them. i wrecked because of a center line so paint makes me cringe.

Only been there once... hung out at Cafe Kaldi for an afternoon with a bunch of accomplished hardcore party kids. I was impressed... all I remember is one of the girls had a velvet bra.

I think my biggest fear is how the bike is going to react when I'm doing a leaning turn and I hit the painted road marking (pedestrian cross walk, turning arrows, etc...).

If you're scared of debris falling down from high places, here's a hint:  Don't go riding under the Encounters Restaurant near LAX  :nono:(news article here (http://"http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/state/16868455.htm")). 1,000 lb sections of stucco have been reported as falling from the building.

.   I used to live in Marin!   :icon_mrgreen:  I went to Mt Tam HS for nearly two years...  Until they kicked me out.

I have two irrational fears...  They are TOTALLY irrational.

I used to LOVE heights, but since I nearly killed myself falling off a rope-swing, I've had nightmares about it and get mild panic attacks and vertigo when I'm up high...  I'm not NEARLY as bad as I was about 13 years ago...  I couldn't stand on a chair back then.  :cookoo:  I get it when I'm in tall buildings...  Or even when I'm watching a movie...  It totally sucks.

The other is a fear of drowning...  I drowned when I was a kid.  I've been irrationally afraid of water as long as I can remember...  My body panics more than my mind...  It's rather odd.  I had a body panic attack when I was wakeboarding...  My mind knew everything was ok, but my heart rate was through the roof and I was shaking like a little chihuahua (No, not from the cold)...   But, I was still having fun.   :dunno_white:

Now...  Put the two together and you have.......    Driving a car off a bridge into water.  Completely irrational...  But, it's a combo of my two irrational fears.     That scene in the movie "The Game" nearly gave me a heart attack.  Or when Mythbusters was doing the "Escape from a car underwater" tests...   :o

On the GS, sometimes I worry that my chain is going to break and wrap around the rear tire....  But, only 'cause I that happened to someone on this board...   :icon_confused:  It's not a real fear though...  I just think about it sometimes....

what about The Abyss? Ever seen that? The sub fills up with water and there's only one suit for two people... she drows consciously... Then he has to drag her to the other one and revive her... phew.

Lots of drowning in that movie.

I wouldn't call it an irrational fear as in i get panic attacks but i really find it hard to start working on something electrical even though i know its perfectly safe. I get completely wound up about touching wires even when they are not live, this extends to putting jump leads on a car battery i get worried doing even that. This stems from a few years ago when we were building the house that i currently live in. We were putting a new ceiling up and my parents were holding a massive sheet of plaster board and i had to poke the light wires through a precut hole in the centre. I knew they were meant to be off so i did it not worrying until i touched them and got a massive mains electric shock and was knocked off the ladder i was standing on and got sever burns on my hand. It would appear that in manovering this massive piece of plaster board that the light switch got knocked on. Im not as bad as i was - i still get nervous though and jumpy. Especially when i do get shocked by something even just a slight shock then it just knocks ya back.
