Title: Clutch engages REALLY late?
Post by: BigTwin on March 11, 2007, 01:47:09 PM
I have a 2001 GS, and I am having a problem with my clutch. It seems to only start grabbing at the last few mm of travel (or so it seems).

I have adjusted the cable at the motor, lever, and I've adjusted the pusher mechanism to spec, and it seems to always grab at that last moment.

I absolutely hate riding like this, because I'm pretty sure the clutch isn't fully engaging either. When I hit the throttle with any force,it seems like the motor revs, and the clutch has to catch up with the motor.

Also, when I'm starting off in first gear it hits a point where it seems like the clutch jerks and it won't allow me to slip the clutch smoothly in first gear. Pretty much right as the clutch is about to be fully let out it sort of jerks, and it may do it in other gears, but first is where I notice it.

If anone has any ideas plaease let me know.

THANKS, Kyle -BigTwin-

Well the cable probably needs more slack.  By "adjusting" is that what you're doing?

If your description of the symptoms is accurate, it sounds like the clutch is either burned up or worn out.  Sometimes you can bring the clutch back to life by deglazing the clutch plates with sandpaper/emory.  My oldest GS is 24yrs old and I've yet to have the need to replace clutch plates.
