Title: What RPM do you shift at?
Post by: Raydr on March 14, 2007, 07:20:55 AM
I did a search and wasn't able to find any discussions related to this...

What RPM do you typically shift at?  All this time I was just shifting when it felt "natural", but I've been seeing some posts that implied they were waiting until the 6-7K RPM range to do their shifting....

Thoughts?

I did find this thread: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=3792.0

But it doesn't help much. Thanks!

This has been covered, a lot.. but I don't know what search terms to tell you to use, so I'll just answer

For around town riding, I'll shift at about 7K, cuz I like to keep the bike cruising at 6K, right at the beginning of the powerband, so that I've got good acceleration or good compression braking at hand, without having to shift a lot. I believe in low gears, high revs. The bike revs to 10.5K for a reason. On a spirited ride, I'll shift at about 9.5K.

Here's (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28168.0) a thread that discusses it some.

5k-11k   :dunno_white:  Depends on how I'm riding and how much noise I want to make...

Generally, I shift around 6k-8k...  But, never before 4k-5k...

It depends...on stuff, and my mood, and how late I am.

If you're shifting at 8K and spinning the rear tire on a stock GS (Or even a modified GS) you need new tires.

Or to stop spraying them with WD-40 or ArmorAll.

My DR-Z doesn't have a tach, so I shift at "mraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

another thing that changes when u change is (in uk) if your bike has restricted power, i had mine restricted to 33bhp for 2 years and i havd to change at 5-6k and it sounded like the bike was gunna die!! and in town i was changing at 3-4k, now its unrestricted i can change at 9ish usually, or iff im really enjoying the ride il often redline  sounds good though, with a standard can you have to rev the balls off it to get a good scream! lol

Gag it till it sounds like pencils tapping on a desk (11000) Seriously, when racing, 7 is the bottom and 10.5 is shift point. The more you run it like that, the better it runs. GS are happy lugging around town at 4-5 if you like. Good antique machinery (over 25 year old technology)

I shift at 5-7k rpm just putting around and keep it in the 7-9k range when running hard in the twisties.  My 02 is strictly stock and power peak is about 8500 so running it a bit past peak to 9k and upshifting drops it to the top of the torque curve at about 7k.  Same when slowing, I downshift at about 7k to pick it back up when running a fast pace.  Keeping it in that narrow band makes for a good pace for me.  Here's what stock dyno curves look like:

If you do a good job jetting, modifying the intake, and put on an open exhaust, then the 7-10.5 k range mentioned by Happytrack sounds good to me.  Here's Annies curves on her modified GS showing the hp peak carrying on to about 10k before it drops:

Cruising down the Interstate at 75-80 mph all day sounds like it's just humming along happily to me on the stock GS.   :thumb:

Around town, to save fuel and keep it quiet for the locals = 5000

When gettin up it = 8000 1st, 9000 2nd, 9500 3rd and 4th, 10,000 5th and 6th

u guys are crazy... at 7-8k my bike is pretty noisy and the grips are vibrating my hands into numbness. I upshift at 4-6k, unless I am consciously revving higher due to some discussion on this board.

don't hate

REally depends on what im doing.... if im in the mood to go fast with a straight away in front of me then 10500rpm it is (stupid valve float) other wise its around 4000-6000 rpm

not sure what you mean by harmonic vibration... that sounds like some Mayan calendar raver hippies I used to know :flipoff: No seriously, at 7-8k the sound is like VREEEEEEEEE even with earplugs, and the vibration is definitely there. After a longer ride esp. on twisties there is some leftover tingling and numbness in my hands, and if I'm carrying a girl on the back she says her hands are tingly/numb too  :o for a while. With the drag bars it was even worse, now I have stockers on there.

I suspect this is a stock situation thus it hasnt really bothered me, like it was something really wrong with it. Maybe it could be improved...

I just ordered a new air filter element too... maybe I should consider upgrading filters but not sure I want to rejet and replace exhaust and all that crap.

Witnessing this thread I can see that I tend to the mild side of the Tach, probably around 5-7K.  NightRider and I may be kindred spirits.

Oh, and my ride starts to buzz at around 5200, steading out around 6200.  Or at least 6200 is when the mirrors become useable again.   :)

Around town, particularly at night, I try to stay around 5k.

When I'm in a good mood and its nice out, maybe 7k.

On the highway I usually try to keep the revs lowish just because I feel like I'm wasting gas otherwise. Maybe 4-6k.

I shift at about 5-7k unless I'm in a hurry or feel like moving fast. Most of the time I just mosey along at about 4.5-6k...I'm after the gas mileage, not the dust behind me after all.

I'm all stock except for a drop in K&N.  I dunno maybe it's just me but I'm not happy if I'm not pullin G's so i usually shift at about 8k  unless there's a tard in a honda next to me then I just wail it out so I can wait for like ten minutes at the next light and laugh at him for wasting all that money on a stupid car when he coulda spent a tenth the cash for a bike that leaves it in the dust.  for example the ducati 999r dusts a lambo gallardo all around more than a second faster in 0-60 and ran .4 seconds faster on a mile track.  ducati 999r :   16,000 dollars  Lambo Gallardo: 250,000 dollars.

noticed after a 60 mile ride on country roads at higher rpms I returned 5-10 mi higher mpg average. was more like 45-50 mpg rather than 32-38. Whether this is due to the higher rpm or straighter than stoplight roads, not sure, but I likes it.  :icon_mrgreen: someone mentioned it's jetted lean at higher rpms, which makes me thing the lower rpm shifting i have always done has been costing me gas.

We have a previous post, just for you SpcTerry -- have a look at Wanna Race to the End of the Runway? (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=18420.0)

Just in case the link is stale (it didn't work for me just now), try this link to the porscheR1avion.wmv (http://amisvirtuels.free.fr/documents/porscheR1avion.wmv) video (Windows Media Player)

Cheers.

That's great. i'd do that in a heartbeat.  I have found that outside of the vettes and porsches even my little GS can dust almost any car off the line.    The Porsche is a mean machine,  a guy in my neighborhood has a 911 turbo, it's just insane how fast that thing goes!!!!!!!  I'm a speed junkie I guess.   When I reenlist this summer I'm buying a new bike,  thinking 998r  or if the bonus is right I might try for that 1098 Duc put out.  Probably keep the GS though for daily use.   you can bet when that happens I'm gonna be looking for an Air Force Base so I can find something to race.
