Title: Drag bars....
Post by: wilgarn on March 14, 2007, 04:24:51 PM
Anyone know if the drag bars would smack my fairing at full turn ? http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=5740&gift=False&0=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D3249%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D%2CStreet%20Handlebars&1=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D1595%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D0%2CBikemaster%20Street%20Handlebars&mscssid=A0C7EDB3619940EC9726E7EEDAA437F0 wow long link huh. My bike is 2006 GS500F. Im wanting a set of bars with much less rise and sweep than the stockers....

Unless someone has personal experience, it's hard to tell with F models.

I bought the clubmans for my 97 and they wouldn't fit around the top triple (I was mounting them in the downward position).  Just look at the width before you buy.

Drag bars won't fit the F very well...you need bars that are pulled back pretty good.

FWIW, I have the Bikemaster Superbike bars, they fit just about perfect on my E. They look like they may be pulled back a bit more, but are still pretty low rise.

Clubmans take some modding to get to fit the F model at lock else they will smack the fairing.

Clubman bars are good...but they tend to flex BIG TIME when you are being a little more than spirited with them, mostly due to the extra tubing.
When I fitted Tommaselli clubman bars on my '00, it fit well enough, but they loved to flex, and were very viba-rific.

Here's a shot of them fitted on:

I bought some drag bars, and they sucked.

Ok, so I have 2 issues with these bars. First, they hit my tank at full turn. Thats not much of an issue to me though because I never turn that sharp anyway and I can still lock the forks without them being tight against the tank. They leave about 1/16 of an inch clearance. Second issue... they hit the nut looking things on my fork cover. Its seems they are tightened against that on the bottom instead of the "seat" they are supposed to tighten against. I'm gonna look for different bars, but in the meantime i will repaint my stockers and reuse them.

simple solution to the second problem: Loosen the pinch bolts, and slide the forks through the triples just a tiny bit, until the bars seat how they're supposed to.

I havent the slightest idea of how to do that ! I am assuming the "triple" is the peice of metal that connects the forks to the frame. How would I go about sliding the forks through there ? Do I tighten the 2 "nuts" that are holding the bars off (&appear to connect to the forks) or what ?

your going to have to loosen four bolts two on the fork braces and the two pinch bolts right under the top triple its not that hard loosen them and pull the forks out a little tighten all the bolts and go for a ride. dont forget to use you center stand :thumb:  hope that helps im guessing someone can add some pics

just know, if they're touching tank at full turn, they will dent tank if you go down. I have the multiple dents from the first pair of dragsters still  :icon_mrgreen:

Thanks for the info guys, sliding the forks down just a bit (about 1/4") worked great. Now, to just NOT drop my bike lol. Surely 1/4" won't effect the geometry enough to make any difference in handling right?!?! One more question.. From what I've gathered what I just did is to "raise" my bikes front, so to "lower" it the process would be just the opposite, where the forks would be exposed above the top triple correct? I do not want to do that, just curious.

No, just the opposite... you actually lowered your front. Think about it. Think long and hard.

Sliding the forks downward through the triples (tripleclamps) raises the front end of the bike.  Same as raising the triples up the fork legs.

Or, you could look at the front end as being the front wheel, in which case, you "lowered" the front end in relation to the rest of the bike.  :icon_rolleyes:
Title: Re: Drag bars....
Post by: wilgarn on March 24, 2007, 10:33:22 PM
Ok, well.... If I had measured from the top triple clamp to the center of my front wheel before it would have been "X" inches.
Now, after pushing the forks down through the triple clamp, the measurement would be "X+1/4"".
This is assuming zero load on the forks, bike suspended. So if increasing the distance between the top triple clamp and center of wheel is
"lowering" my bike then I woulda have to ask another question : How does that effect the price of green tea in China ? lol, I think something got lost in the translation...... :icon_confused:

Thats not sarcasm... nice attempt at a cover up though.   :icon_rolleyes:

I have low rise which are very similar to drag bars. Mine have a little rise and pull back.

Just to let you know the wrist fatigue goes through the roof for me. Especially with my lady on the back.

Be ready for it.

um... I am not the brightest person in the world but I'm not THAT DUMB. I just replaced forks a couple months ago. And surprisingly enough, this part of it was not difficult for me to understand  :flipoff:

read up on 'trail'...when you move the forks up or down it changes your trail...
