You're going to come home one afternoon and find the lamp on the floor and a hole in the top of your coffee table.

Or, possibly, you'll come home and find the lamp on the floor but the bulb will be unbroken.  One of your cats will have cushioned its fall.

Now what you need to do is sandblast it and get a quart or so of tool black.  That will leave a nice matte black finish.  I suppose you could always spend the afternoon in front of a burr king and get it ready for chrome.   8)
