Title: Inherited a bike...help, please?
Post by: throttledgirl on March 17, 2007, 08:39:18 PM
Hey
I'm new here!  You guys probably get my kind of questions all the time, so I apologize in advance.  I've recently "inherited" an awesome 2001 gs500 that I've been coveting for a while...I'm itching to ride it, but it needs two things.  1: the fork seals need to be replaced and 2: the front wheel needs to be replaced.  I have done some reading, and found that Katana 600 and 750 wheels will fit, but no one's specified whether the years need to be corresponding.  This is only an issue bc I can't really find any gs500 front rims anywhere (ebay and craigslist included), and I don't want to spend a lot of money on this.  If you guys could help me out with that, it'd be super  :)
This is my first bike so I'm more than willing to do the work on it that it needs...especially since the only things I'd be paying for are the seals, and front rim.  So far anyway.
Oh, yeah- would I have to get anything else for the Kat rim, like say a Kat rotor?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

89-97 kat front rim is same
The kat rotor is smaller and there are 2
the fork seals are pretty cheap
need seals/dust seals/ (unless you are less than 120#)  probably need stiffer springs also

NEVER.... EVER... EVER  buy LEAK PROOF FORK SEALS!!!!!!!!....  they WILL leak
stock or stock type replacements

If in NC,  I'd help rebuild them...for gud beer :icon_lol:

oh wait. you wanted help. well, with the seals, all necessary info is easily found on here and the procedure is pretty easy... i am a nub and I got it done piecemeal, plus new tubes, springs, and fork oil, in a couple afternoons. Messy but otherwise ok.

Srinath where are you. tell her about the katana front end.

why booger $15 seals when ya can pay $20 and get a set that work

I'm cheap but I HATE doing a job twice for a stupid reason

I think a friend owes me beer right now cause he got leak proofs.....and I told him....NO LEAK PROOF....."the guy at the shop said they were just as gud"
translates to shop made and extra $1 profit selling them compared to stock ones.

I've bought and used leak proofs ... They are softer than stock. They require extra delicate handing, and if you do it right and that means everything will ahve to be clean, clean clean, and then, apply vaseline between the seal and dust cover, trust me, they will survive armageddon. I will not trust any shop to install anything let alone fork seals.
And get this ... Nothing like no leaks to completely compensate for divots in the fork legs.
Cool.
Srinath.

Hey, guys thanks for all the input
I don't think I'll have any trouble with the fork seals(well, hopefully); and if anyone(e.g. dgyver) has a front wheel pleeease pm me.
Oh, and thanks for the offers to help! :) ...I'm in DC, though, but I think I'll manage.
You'll all definitely hear more questions from me...
Thanks again!

I don't remember them having springs....
they are a softer rubber and have a metal shim
and they drop in cause they are smaller O.D.

I guess it's ok if you like changing seals....lifetime warr.   but you have to buy 2 sets to be able to keep getting free replacements....have to send old set before you get new set!!!!!!

Hmmm maybe thats Just for the Older Suzuki Models. :icon_confused: I just heard it would work. Not that I would try them myself as Long as Good Replacements can be Found.Luckily I've never had to replace fork seals Yet but I'm going to have to on my GT750 when I get to work on it.
