Title: Engine Oil??
Post by: spc on March 24, 2007, 03:34:11 PM
I was just wondering what type everybody uses... i know there's a lot of debate about the difference between motorcycle and automotive oils.   I've also heard that while auto oil is ok in the bigger bikes with an engine similar to a cars that it's a bad idea for air-cooled.  Lemme know.  I just read about some guy gettin 200,000 miles out of a cbr using just castrol GTX!!!!!!

NoooOoOoOooooo....not the oil wars!!! ???  I followed Srinath's lead and used cheap Wally World motor oil in my commuter GS. I use synthetic in my precious snookie-wookumz SVS. ;)

One thing to think about...this motor design has been in production for over 30 years......back when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth.

The most important thing is NOT to run an energy conserving oil with a wet clutch.

Well I just went and changed it to GTX  and honestly it sounds a little smoother  everything went well.  hopefully it stays that way

Gotta love oil questions.

I say...

"Use the best oil you can afford to change regularly  :thumb: "

Personally I use synthetic Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60.

Yea, my turn signals blink a little quieter with the new Motul 30 weight turn signal oil I put in   And I know its gonna be tough but I think I am going to go ahead and upgrade the muffler berings soon as well.  :icon_rolleyes:

You have turn signals!!!!!  :o   where's the fun in that!!!!  It takes all the guesswork out of not getting obliterated by some jackass in an SUV so big that they had to put a diesel engine in it.   It's probably also happy cause I finally got around to actually changing the filter with the oil.   :dunno_white:

I've found that short of small arms fire  :2guns:  the best signal is a single finger       :flipoff:   just stick it out in the way you intend to go.......... :thumb:
( Don't get me wrong small arms fire is still the most effective,  just tends to aggravate your local law enforcement!!!)

I use castrol synthetic car oil.
Not because I think the motor needs it. I like the smooth shifting I get with it.
It's not that expensive at Wally world.

Yeah I ran Syntec in my truck til I sold it.  made everything a little smoother.  I'd just heard that a full synthetic can make a wet clutch slip

The Energy Conserving types will. Stay clear of them and don't go with oils of too low a viscosity and you'll be fine :correct:

I had slipping with synthetic and a stock clutch, which are cork. When I switched to a Barnett clutch, which are kevlar, and synthetic no problems.

I ran the same sythetic in my TLR and never had a problem, kevlar clutch.

Ok I guess I'm at a happy medium  I'm not putting in Wal-mart sludge but I'm not goin synthetic yet.    I'm getting a shiny new bike this summer and that one will have nothing but the best  ( not sure what type bike yet  I'm pretty split between a gixxer 1000, triumph daytona 675, and an older Duc 99xr superbike,  any suggestions??)

Yeah the engine will run a lot smoother with oil, you should definatly use some. I like the slippery kind. I'd also steer clear of olive oil, It's really expensive and in my opinion dosn't worn that well. Cheap vegtable oil isn't really any worse than the expensive oilive oil, but in general, I find that it's best to stay away from cooking oils, they can make the clutch slip.

Hi there,
For 32 years, I've been running Castrol GTX in all of my four-stroke motorcycles, incouding my lovely 1991 GS500E. I run Castrol GTX 10W-40 in my GS and never have any oil problems or engine wear issues.
It's good oil.
Best wishes,
Todd

Yeah I've put about 100 miles on the GTX I just changed to  and everything seems fine,  it actually feels like it shifts a little smoother.  So I'll probably be sticking with it.  Can't beat 2 bucks a quart for a good oil!!

GS: 10w40 JUST LIKE THE KNOB SAYS!

Accord: 5w30 JUST LIKE THE KNOB SAYS!

B2000: Anything that's on sale and say "AUTO" on it, maybe tranny fluid if it's really cheap.

Don't laugh.

gs= 15,000 miles
Accord= 201,500 miles
B2= close to 300,000 by now, the ticker died at 237,000 three years ago.

ya, they all sound like a box o rox with a monkeywrench thrown in, but they don't smoke, or use more than 5% between changes.

Yeah, she loves that old thing.  I can't say much bad other than with a yellow paint job it looks like a taxi.  Mileage is awesome though it runs about 35 in town and close to 45 on highway.  And she bought it and the spare engine for 1800!!!!!  It's going to the paint shop soon too.

In case anyone was wondering honda has tested synthetics against high quality conventional oils and found no benefit.

(I sell their engines, it's my job to know.)
