OK well I bought me an 89 beater to tool around with and she runs good, however gas just pours out the overflow on the carbs. So I pulled the carbs and they were pretty cruddy, so I stripped them down and cleaned them real good. Well I put them back on tonight and had the same problem. Well I took them back off and did some closer inspecting of the floats and needles and the one needle had somehow gotten stuck clear shut (obviously not causing the overflow). I pulled it out of the valve and noticed that it drags quite a bit when I just slide it in and out....well after looking closer it looks like somone removed the valve as some point with pliers and now instead of being nice and round its got a slight oblong shape to it. And neither valve on either carb seems to seat quite well anymore either....should these be fairly snug? The O-ring is still there and appears to be intact, but I can wiggle them around quite a bit.
I guess my question is should I pay $30-$40 for a rebuilt kit, or just buy a newer set of carbs? What year carbs will fit my 89?
With your carbs removed from the engine Have you tried tilting them whilst blowing air down the fuel line (yes use your mouth).
This should cause the floats to rise sealing the needle valve. If it doesn't there is a problem.
If so buy a rebuild kit.
If you buy a pair of second hand carbs it would be just your luck that they will soon need a rebuild too.
Anybody know a good place to get a carb rebuild kit? I see generic ones on ebay going for $20-30.
I've always heard good things about Parts 'n More (https://www.partsnmore.com/) for carb kits and gasket sets, etc. Looks like $12 per carb from them
edit: only problem is they require an order of $35 or more... It never hurts to have extra gaskets though :icon_lol:
... or you could load up on extra oil filters
Not a bad price, but I don't know if I want to do business with a place that makes people commit to a minimum order...thats kinda dumb. I think I might give Ebay a shot. Thanks for your help.
