So now that its nice out I brought my bike in for 3,000 mile service and a stage 1 rejet. Over the winter I installed a K&N filter and Jardine exhaust and didnt want to start riding till I got the jets...So I drop it off monday, pick it up thursday, excited as hell. Everything looks great. So I pull out of the dealership and see what the mods really did...it was sweet! However, only with wide open throttle....During "average" acceleration it seemed to bog down/hesitate from 4,000 - 5,000 rpm. I would've turned around and brought it back right then but they had just closed...when I get home I'm pissed...looking at the filter, cables, throttle...trying to figure out something...but...no explanation for the lack of power in just that range. I also found out that it was idling at 1,600rpm and if I turned the handlebars all the way to the right it would rev the engine up to about 3,500 rpm...so why did I pay over $500 for someone to make my bike shittier?! I'm gonna bring it back today to see what they have to say...*sigh...good help is so hard to find these days...
Well I cant say about the re-jetting exhaust and whatnot... but I've had the "turning handlebars revs the motor" problem before myself... sounds like your throttle cable is too tight/pinched somewhere. Do you have handlebar risers by any chance?
I have aftermarket clipons...so its actually about two inches lower...now that i think about it there wasnt much play in the throttle like there used to be...i'll have to check the tension...could that be whys its idling high too?

I dunno, you tell me...
you could have spent $25 bucks for the jets & done it yourself in 2 hours max, by getting the correct sizes & instructions off this site for free.
now by paying someone else to do it you have little to no idea of what could be wrong with the setup.
anyways, you'e been buttraped. I'd take the bike back to the dealership, tell them all the issues, & have them correct them for free to get your money's worth.... or $25 worth anyways...
I would almost put money on it.... I had an old yamaha FZ600 that did that once, after I loosened the cables (and routed them the right way) the idle went back down to normal and the bike didnt try to shoot out from under me on left turns!
Adjust the idle with the idle adjuster screw on the bottom of the carbs. The throttle cable is adjusted wrong, or snagging somewhere. Sounds like the rejet was completely f%&ked up by someone. Take it back, make them fix it.
check the idle screw to bring the idle back to normal.
check that nothing is interfering w/ the throttel cable, otherwise the tech may have mesed something up when he reconnected the cables to the carbs.
P.S: what NGFL said
Is your K&N filter a drop in filter or a lunchbox/pod filter? If it's of the lunchbox/pod variety, then that stage 1 rejet isn't going to cut it and you're probably running lean. Pull the plugs and see what color they are: black, tan, or white?
+1000 on rejetting it yourself. The guys at the dealership really know nothing about jetting a GS500. You can get lots more info than they have access to right here, and do it yourself with far better results.
+1 to the throttle cable being bound up somewhere. Check its routing and adjust its tension once you're sure it's free and routed properly. Then adjust your idle screw.
Yeah, I should have done it myself but I thought since it was in for service anyways, let them do it...I've never had any problems with this dealer before...but...
