Title: 90 Modded GS Won't Start
Post by: laserjpb on July 19, 2003, 06:56:35 PM
I just got my gs500e (1990) and have been riding it in the evenings after work. I was away this last weekend, and when I tried to start it up this morning, it just clicked and clicked repeatedly. I let it sit the whole day, and just tried it again...no dice, just buzzing.
The mods on the bike are from the previous owner who raced it (jet kit, K&N, full exhaust).  I also just recently had the plugs changed, and the tech said it ran a bit rich. Also, the bike has no choke connected (no idea why...never used it).

dead battery, might check see if something is draining the power or just get a battery tender. Also could be bad battery.

Ok, I'll try changing the battery. Also, since there's no choke switch on the handlebar, is there a spring or switch I can push on the engine itself? (until I get one put on)

None at all? It should be attached to the horn/signal/light switch on the left side along with the clutch lever. Maybe just no cable to the carb? Choke is cable operated wouldnt be able to do it with your hand really. If the bike is running rich thats a choke in itself.

None at all. So, nothing on the engine you can push? Though it does seem electrical, because only a clicking or buzzing is heard. Thanks

sounds like a dead battery.
Go to the right side (throttle side) of the bike and there should be a bar at the front of the carbs near the top that you can push in and hold to choke the carbs while you start it. It should spring back to the choke off position after you stop pushing it.

Don't know if you figured out your dead battery problem yet, but here are some pictures that may answer your question about the choke.

The first picture shows the right-side carb, and the second is a closeup showing the choke bar that you can push by hand to richen the mix.  It should spring back on its own.
