I know I dont frequent this site all that often, but I just thought I'd let you guys know that I have now successfully fuel injected and turbo charged my 1991 GS 500E.
I have use two throttle bodies from a Kwaka GPZ750, Haltech ECU, IHI turbo, a heap of one off home made stuff and the odd car part.
Here's a link to some of the details http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4463
You may ask why. Because I could :icon_twisted:
Have you overheated your front tire yet?
Are you seriously turbocharging a 90k mile GS? Keep the boost...uh...low. I don't mean to poo-poo, it actually looks pretty fun!

It also looks as if you are going to boil your front tire.

Guess you didnt check out his nick name area on the other forum....

BTW:.. that is awesome! Nice work! be sure to post your updates on our site as well.. :thumb:
The turbo has an internal waste gate, but I will have to change the actuator to open it earlier. I'm running between 7 to 8 psi, which is twice what I actually wanted . I didn't reallly build it for reliability, I was just trying to prove a point. Blowing it up is probably inevidable. I also have a 97 RF 900R, the GS will never be a match for it, but it's still good fun.
I took it to the April Fools Run last weekend, which is the biggest streetfighter get together in Australia. Picked up two trophys for my efforts, Most Progress on a Built since last AFR, and Best shed built Streetfighter. I was pretty happy with that.
I saw your video on youtube yesterday and was hoping you'd post on this forum soon. Great work.
nice work ice.
what ihi snail is that - td08? if it is or is similar size - it looks like a good size on the gs. funny, the td08 is the stock one that comes in my car (ver7 wrx) and it looks tiny in it. but it isn't laggy and pushes 17/18 pounds just fine :icon_twisted: the boost your running should be plenty for the gs.
looking forward to hearing more about it (either here or in your original thread) and congrats again with your work man.
Very Cool,,,very nice.
I've always wondered about fuel injecting a GS.
awesome work!
I did up a bit of a spec sheet, hope this answers everyone's questions.

Very cool.
Wish I coul;d see it in the flesh.

Fuel injection is something that could actually be sold for used bikes, and breath life into NEW bike sales for GS's.
C'mon
Ok now for the $64 question, whats it like on the road?
Faster than a standard GS
Thanks, thats what I was wondering ;)
That Is A Fine Lookin Gs . One Thing , Crash Bars Look Soo Silly , Looks Like The Oz best Streetfightered Gs Is In His Hands.,. Hopefully illl Build The Uk's ;)
that's great ice - my mates and I have been debating which turbo you used. your awards were well earned.
bd.
The turbo is a IHI RHF3, it's an after market add on for small capacity cars.
Hi, icebaby.
Awesome job on the bike. I am thoroughly impressed - i.e. f%$king cool!
I have a series of questions about the fuel injection part, and hope you find time to answer them.
what kind of controller did you use on the EFI?
did you tune the engine in a dyno cell, or just on a roller?
finally, did the GPZ throttle bodies just bolt up in place of the stock GSers or did you have to modify them, or the GS head?
what size injectors did you use?
what kind of fuel pump did you use, and did you build it into the fuel tank?
Thanks for your time.
Check out my other thread on a BCM. The reason I ask about the controller, is because I'm wondering if it has CAN capability. If it's megasquirt, awesome.
Lev
ECU is a Haltech F9. We had a basic map to work with, just modified it to suit.
To tune it we strapped a laptop to the fuel tank and rode it up and down the road in front of my mates place for about three days, adjusting it accordingly between each run. It's still not perfect but I had a deadline to meet so it was a case of near enough is good enough.
The GPZ throttle bodies are running standard 750 injectors,(not sure of the size). Luckily they fitted into the rubbers which join the GS carbies to the head. I had to change the spacing of the throttle bodies to match the head spacing, this was not a complex operation but there was quite afew fiddly little brackets, spacers and linkages.
The fuel pump is a Fuelmiser FPE-240 electric fuel pump. It's an after market external pump for a car and rather bulky around 160mm (6 1/2inch) long and 62.5mm (2 1/2 inch) in diameter.
Hope this helps.

So how long befor we can start a 'Fuel Injected GS FAQ and HOWTO' thread ?
I'll give good money toward a simple FedExable kit for a FI GS500. I'll bet others would too.
I probably would :thumb: what the hell :thumb: As long as price didn't got to high :o
Just thought I'd throw a couple of update pics
(http://www.streetfighters.com.au/forum/upload/188079093191502.jpg)
I have a few minor repairs to do after the workout it got a couple of weeks ago. The biggest problem I encounted was the rubber inlet tubes split open. Aparently 17 year old standard GS rubbers aren't strong enough to withstand 6 - 10 psi of boost.

servus ice,
great job from you.
this is the BEST streetfighter GS ever, no doubt about it!
great job!!
do you have any videos of the bike running? I think I missed them
cheers
KaMeL
I'm diggin it.
AWESOME
And yes, some video would be KILLER! :thumb:
Very nice work, looks much nicer than the other attempts at a turbo GS I have seen :thumb:
Sick thing :thumb: Now tell us exactly what you did with it ,besides the turbo kit of course ;)
why isnt this sticky?
Great bike Mate!!!
I seem to remember expectations of 80-100hp, what'd it end up as???
That's an immensely impressive project. If, by your own admission, it's an enormous amount of effort just to make it like a bigger bike, what was your motivation? What kept you going through the long hours?
It's unique. It may only put out the same hp as an SV or maybe an older Gix, but it does so using a GS500 engine. It's a talking point and a work of admiration. Anytime I see something custom, whether it be a gorgeous Ducati with custom paint or a revived old school Kawi 400 that's been bobbered, I take a minute to try to learn a bit about it and appreciate the work that went into it's construction.
I love it when this guy posts. :)
I'll 2nd the question: "Why isn't this a sticky?"

+1
And I'm not talking about a busa with all the chrome ad-ons. A truly custom bike like this with many hours of work put into it deserves a lot of props! Truly excellent work. The bike is awesome. :thumb:
A busa with chrome everything isn't custom it's just a statement of how far one is willing to go into debt to make 'the right' impression on other people. Custom is something like this, or a Ducati 750ss with a custom paint job of a rippling Italian flag, or an old school whatever revived and given a little something extra. This is an awesome bike and definitely proves that the little GS can be a monster among bikes.

Well put. :thumb:
that is freaking awesome.

why isnt this sticky?
Not enough details about the build. At least that's my understanding of what constitutes a sticky, great details
Thanks for the great feedback guys.
I'll compile a build history with pics over the next few days and post it up.
Unfortunatliy I don't have a video camera so I don't have any video, but I'll see if I can borrow one from somewhere and get some footage.
I'll try and answer everyone's question in the build history
Has this ever been updated? Any new info anywhere?
Scoured the interwebs up and down...
