Title: New pics: Flat Black w/ dual headlights and more
Post by: LostDog on April 09, 2007, 07:44:19 PM
The mirrors are Motrax barends that I picked up at CycleGear. I had to use different bolts to attach them to the threaded inserts in my stock bars, and use a spacer to keep the throttle grip from binding with the mirror. The taillight is from an older R1. I got it for ten bucks on eBay. It fills the tail better than the stock taillight, but it's not a direct bolt in. I had to grind out part of the stock mount and make a bracket. I also chopped the rear fender and mounted the turn signals higher up.

I've always like the flat black, looks great on your bike. I also like the way you have dual headlights and the tail lights have that similar shape along with the speedo and tach, it just looks really nice. Good work.  :thumb:

Looks good. I like the lights, can't wait to get mine. Hard for me to tell, but the motrax' look like they clamp around the bars.. but you said something about the bolts needing to be longer for the threaded inserts.. so I'm confused. I'd like to try em, but can't screw anything into my bar ends, since I've got custom clipons.

Do those head lights use the stock brackets? I really want to buy a pair.

According to what I read in his other post (and the pictures here), yes, they do.

Did he say anything about night visibility with the lights? I'll check the other thread.

Edit: nvm Found an answer

I'm surprised I haven't seen more flat black GSs with all the responses I get. The paint was 9 bucks a can at Kragen and I barely needed to use the second can.

The headlight does use the stock mounts. I reused a bracket from the headlight kit to connect the two, and used the bolts that came in the kit to mount. It's really easy, but if anybody else doing this needs help just let me know. Also, don't forget you need something to hide all your wiring in. I used a project box from Fry's.

I'm pretty much done with the cosmetic changes. I put a lunchbox on and rejetted, but being a budget bike I don't wanna put a $300 exhaust on. In total I've spent about $1800 including the bike, registration, tires, and all mods. I've had the bike for 3 months. I don't have very good before pictures, but the previous owner had a fetish with fake carbon fiber.  :cookoo:

Looks good. I like the flat black, I had been planning on using truck bed liner on mine but I might go flat black instead.

I have the same taillight. 98-99 R1.

Btw, how much prep work did you have to do for the paintjob?

For the paint I just sanded everything really good, then washed them and used some degreaser. After that just spray on some light coats. I didn't take all the paint off. It took me a little more than one can.

They fit into the holes of the bars.  And use an expander nut the keep themselves in there.  Its actually an easy setup and adjustment.  But like you said your bar ends have to be hollow.

im glad someone else is using these..Everytime i mention them i catch hell for the suposed "poor visibility"  but they actually open up that large area your shoulder blocks.

congrats on the bike
