Title: Rear Sprocket Upgrade?
Post by: MinnesotaCafe on April 11, 2007, 04:48:44 PM
Hokay, so, I'm upgrading to the 4.5 inch rear wheel, and a Diablo tire. Along with the wheel came a 47, yes, 47 tooth sprocket. The GS's is 39 stock right? This is about a 20% increase in the gear ratio, if I'm doing my calculations correctly (which it is entirely likely that I'm not), and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with a sprocket of this size, or can tell me what I might expect. I do not desire to do any stunting, or other silly squid s*&t like that. Thanks for any help, in advance, from a nOOb to this site.

It'll be close to dropping the front sprocket 3 teeh (to a 13T). Expect power wheelies in first, and possibly second. Highway cruising is going to be very high revving. It should be fine for low speed commuting, but any sort of sustained high speed endeavors, I'd shy away.

Sounds kinda fun though.

Yeah, if you keep it on there, get used to looking at the sky until your wheel goes down every time you give it just a little to much throttle coming out of a stop :thumb:

About 20% is correct.  A stock geared GS turns about 5500 rpm @ 70 mph and with the 47T rear and stock 16T front it would be about 6630 @ 70.

I used to run in 5th gear with big twins on the freeways which would be about 6200-7100 rpm at 70-80 mph.  A tad buzzy but not bad, pulled nice.

If you have a chain long enough, why not try it and see if you like it.  Should be less likely to wheelie than a 600 cc sportbike.

47 it two more than I have on the rear sprocket. I love my 45  :thumb: I try to avoid long highway rides anyways because sticky tires get expensive!

Thanks for all the responses. I think my top speed is going to be about 90 mph, but we'll see. I'm going to give it a shot, and I'll let y'all know what I think. Unfortunately, it might be a while as it just snowed 4 inches here!  As for long rides, my buddy that I ride with most of the time has a 99' CBR600 F4 that he let's me ride, so we'll see how the old GS toy does!

p.s.
This forum is awesome. While I haven't posted much, it's been an invaluable asset to me this spring as I've been Jazzing up the bike, so again, thanks all!

What color is your GS? Is it Black or Purple? If you've had it for the last year or two, and ride it around school, then I've seen you. Either way, right now, carbs and valves are good, but thatnks much for the offer, we should ride sometime though! :thumb:
