Title: Breaking News!
Post by: Turd Ferguson on April 19, 2007, 10:40:59 AM
I'm sure, by now, we've all seen countless pictures and videos mailed to NBC studios by Cho Seung-Hui.  Airing ANY of that material is an offense against the American public and does NOTHING but promote and celebrate this mass murderer.

It is not news.  It is his message, that he hoped to preach to the world.  Yes, much of it was incoherent and obviously the words of a delusional individual, but it was his battle cry and the way he wanted the world to see him.  Every single network is now airing this material and they are simply promoting the killer and raising him to a hero status to those whom possibly have the same mindset.

The American public has been cheated, undermined and sold by the media once again.  Undoubtedly, many people at NBC knew that they had NO business releasing the material, but they did it anyway.  They did it so that they could be the first to bring us "URGENT BREAKING NEWS."  Its complete, and total corporate bullsh!t.

I agree completely.  Now the next wacko knows just what to do to "guarantee immortality."

Meanwhile, in Iraq, 100 times the number killed at VT have been killed so far in this elective war.  1000 times that number have been maimed for life (if we can even believe the Pentagon figures).  Where is the concern and the half-mast flags for those young Americans?  Where is the outrage over some 650,000 (or more) dead Iraqi civilians?  Where is the indignation at the architect of that catastrophe?

What the media chooses to cover (and who they protect) is absolutely amazing.  Sorry to go slightly off-topic, but I'm perma-pissed at the lack of absolute outrage at the escalation and continuation of the war.

Don't apologize!  That's not off topic at all, it goes right along with what I was talking about.  Great post.

Amen Turd, I am so unbelievably disgusted with the media and the part of our society that just eats that stuff up.  I don't usually post on non-informative threads (I don't post much at all for that matter) but this is EXACTLY how I feel about what has gone down after Monday.  It's nothing more than a slap, no, a kick in the face to the victims' family and friends.

I feel bad because I've been desensitized to this type of violence; when I first heard about it, I was bothered, but not until I realized that Ryan Clark was one of the first two people killed was I really hit by the gravity of what happened.  I went through RA training in 2005 with Ryan - I didn't know him really well, but I know he was a great person, and now that worthless piece of trash took him from the world, along with dozens of other people.  Hell, even after the attacks on 9/11 I don't think I was hit as hard as I was when I saw his face on the news.

I don't understand how I could let myself be so detached from the world, but I don't think that I'm much different from a lot of people in that respect - I had never been to New York, I didn't know anybody there, and I didn't know anyone at the Pentagon, either.  I didn't feel a personal connection with it, the same way I don't feel a personal connection with the people losing their lives in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world for that matter.  That doesn't mean that I don't hate what's going on, or that it doesn't bother me, but I guess it's just not on the same level as when something personally affects me.

The worthless waste of flesh that caused so much grief on Monday is only being celebrated by the networks...as Turd said, this is an offense against the public.  I only wish there was some recourse we had against the media.

I wish this rant made me feel better, but more than that, I wish I could make the victims' families feel better.

And posting about it on here is different ??? You just did what you said not too? You brought more attention to the subject by posting on a site that has nothing to do with the media. So the people here who may have known nothing about the tapes and photos do now and will go and look at them to see what you are talking about.

Say all you want to try and prove otherwise but you just did the same thing the media did.  :nono:

I think that what people forget is that Media is a business. Yes they have a vaguely loose responsibility depending on who you speak to, but they exist to make people watch their station instead of anyone else's. They are a business that thrives on ratings and viewer ship, and they will get that any way possible.
I agree that what the media chooses to report is mostly on the wrong level of priority or just plain trash, but if the American public keeps eating it up, they keep showing it. It's really a double-edged sword :dunno_white:

You know what's probably even worse?

I don't know if any of you have heard of the Phelps family, or the Westboro Baptist Church they run. Check out this video to get an idea of these people:

*NSFW, offensive language*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QRyr3_nCF4&mode=related&search=

Anyway, these people are INSANE, and they are going to be protesting at funerals of the people killed in the VT Shooting.

Check out the front page of their "website" www.godhatesamerica.com to read about it...this makes me SICK. If I saw them all in one group I would quite literally run them all the hell over with my truck. Put me in jail for life for all I care. Disgusting.

With regard to the media, it has turned out exactly how I said it would be.   The celebrity of the damned.   I guess there are only 500 crime scene shows on t.v. and the public needs more gore and violence.  Ass holes like Cho are out there people, and they are willing to be the next contestant on "burn in hell".   They know that there is an outlet for this garbage and that our society will eat it up.   Maybe we should all find better hobbies.  Like playing guitars or working out or paying attention to our kids and our jobs or riding motorcycles.   Sighh. . .

I don't often rant, but here goes:

Like 'em or hate 'em, the news media is out to SELL ADVERTISING time for their respective stations.   They are there to make money, not serve the public.   They will run Cho's Manifesto ad nauseum until the next beautiful white girl goes missing.  What was on the TV all last week?  Don Imus.   And the week before that?  Who's the babydaddy of Anna Nicole's kid?

The news has gone from being "news" to being an endless barrage of informationless sound bites disguised as reporting.  I do watch the news channels (I surf all of them) and get a little bit of news, but when I start to see something I don't want to see again, I change the channel.  Simple, but effective.

The events at VT were horrible and tragic, to say the least.   But they were the product of an insane individual.  He was clearly not a well person.  There is nothing you can do to protect yourself from an insane person, and you can't go locking up everyone who displays weird behavior.

I can't offer much in the way of hope or cheering people up, but I will make a point that you might find helpful:  Everything has a way of balancing out in this world.   For every act of cowardice and hate, there is an act of love and sacrifice.   Did you catch the story about one of the professors at VT who was also a survivor of the Holocaust?  He barricaded the door to his classroom with his own body and bought enough time for several students to escape the gunman.   He also lost his own life.  You cannot act any more selflessly than he did.  And he wasn't the only hero that day.

Shitty things happen to good people in this world.   That's just life.  Try to look for the little glimmer of hope in the darkness.  Always keep your head up and moving keep forward, and just do your best to set a good example for those around you.

Don't worry too much about news organizations giving too much "face time" to Cho Seung-Hui.   Change the channel if you don't like it, or fire off an email to the offending network.  If they get enough people telling them they will watch another network, they will respond accordingly, trust me!

You have your health, you have two hands, and you have today.  Don't waste time worrying about the assholes in the world, they are not going to go away.  Just do your best to be one of the good people.

End of rant.   Hugs to all who want one.

I agree with Fergie... showing his videos, rantings and manifesto are only going to fuel other narcissistic nut cases to emulate him.

I also agree with Caffeine... the media cash machine will keep ringing and the mentally ill will always be around. There is little we can do about it but live our lives and take the crazies as they come.

What I got out of Caffiene's post was that the media will broadcast what it wants; despite the extreme opposition of the only people in America who are not asleep at the wheel.

WE CAN complain about what is going on and get some sort of change!  I can't belive that any of you actually think that the media will continue to bombard us with total crap without our consent.  Even if it is fueled by advertizing and sales, we hold the ultimate power.  If we dont like it, we turn it.  But beyond that, we speak out against that which is wrong.  I can't believe it when I hear good, moral people saying, "Yeah, but what can you do?".

The answer is, you can speak out.  You can use your open mind to open that of others.  Why has the broadcast of the crazy killer's messages stopped?  Has anyone noticed???  All of the major new broadcasting companies have STOPPED including the footage and pictures of the sick bastards message due to people like myself.  I am not claiming to be some sort of revolutionary, as there are THOUSANDS of people who were appauled over the airing of such footage and SPOKE OUT.

Scottpa_GS, how in the world have I given any more coverage to the VT shooter?  Every single network was airing his sick, twisted message over-and-over-and-over-and-over.  If anyone missed it, it would be a huge surprise to me.  From everything I have seen and read, I was in the minority to be offended by it being broadcast.  I'm completely confused by your post and honeslty, I am offended.  Please explain.

exactly my point: there is not much that you or I can do about it, because most are so fascinated by it that they will watch it over-and-over-and-over.  The media outlets make their decisions based on stastics... if you get 'X' viewership and only piss off "Y" people, then you put it on the air.

All of the major networks need to be put in check.  When even the most causal observer can tell that there is very little objectivity left in journalism.  That is a shame.   Objectivity should be their number one objective.  But it is not.  They are driven by ratings, so they spin every story and keep reporting non-events to keep them in the public eye.  They show violence and go for shock value.  The American public has become desensitized to this and all the while the FCC is asleep at the f*cking wheel.  I think by airing Cho's video (exactly what HE wanted), the news networks are dishonoring the fallen and their families.   How would you like it if you turned on the TV and saw a rant by your son's killer, or your brother's killer, or your girlfriend's killer?  For the record, I haven't seen any of this Cho video, so I may be speaking out of turn here.  But I agree with Turd-a-licious.   If it hadn't been for the outcry from the vocal minority, the networks would continue to air more and more of this video and add fuel to the fire

I don't see what was confusing about it...  You posted on a totally unrelated site (granted in the right section) about how the media is bringing attention to a subject that you don't think they should. But, by you posting- look at all the attention you brought to the same subject. ??? Now the thread is growing and growing with even more information about other events like bomb threats and school closings ??? This is soo much better than what the media is doing ehh? And this is helping how?  :2guns: im not trying to piss you off.. I like ya  Just seems a bit hypocritical to me  :cookoo:

The videos and pictures aren't some sort of secret, they were everywhere for about a day on the television.  I am not drawing attention to something that few knew about, I'm talking about something that everyone has, undoubtedly, seen.  I don't believe that speaking about the video in the manner in which this thread does is doing any harm.  Plastering it all over the television and internet and forcing it upon people is a completely different thing.

I guess not voicing my disgust would have been a better idea?  The only reason that the news channels stopped playing the video and displaying the disturbing pictures is because people voiced out.
