Sold my '02 GS (17.5k km) today for 3200 Canadian. Got the valves and rejet done successfully...finally...and learned a whole lot. Bike ran MUCH MUCH better with proper clearances- a whole new bike. Idled very sweetly. Thinking about starting my own GS500 mechanic service for the Toronto area...
Will be buying a 1993 KLR650 this weekend if it looks and rides right.
Thanks for this great database and all the helpful feedback!

Enjoy the KLR, a friend just bought one here in San Diego and is now touring Mexico with it. Has had zero problems and is loving the all-terrain capabilities.

Hey finmac - did you do all the work yourself? how long did it take you to rejet/valve clearance?
I think my bike is in deperate need for a rejet/carb cleaning. It's running pretty rough and doesn't like to idle at proper rpms.
This is my first bike and I'd like to learn to do the work myself - interested in helping out? I'm downtown TO.
This bike apparently has had the beefier doohicky installed and the 10mil frame bolts. Otherwise its a stocker w/ 17k km...prolly just going to use it for this summer working in northern Ontario, sell it and then wait until school's over to get back into cycling.
RoadtoRuin...I did the work myself with lots of help from the Haynes/Clymer manual and the experienced members of this board. Kerry's valve video was a big help.
Don't underestimate how much time and money it will take the first time. Lots of hauling ass to different places to get different parts. It will be cheaper than having it done at a dealer, however and you will have the satisfaction of a good running bike and the knowledge gained.
I have a valve tool that you could borrow and would be more than happy to stop by and talk to you about it. Will be heading up north by the end of next week. Why don't you PM with the details...
I went to cycle world east to exchange shims. They charge 5 bucks per shim exchanged (Would not recommend this though, unless you physically take the cams off to get the shims out...otherwise you need 4 temporary replacement shims so you dont grind the cam lobes when turning the engine over)
Went to winners circle at 187 steelcase road for jets and shim tool.
