Title: Those of you who have done the LED dash mod:
Post by: NiceGuysFinishLast on April 20, 2007, 12:06:17 AM
I read the old thread, to get all my ideas and stuff... Just looking for an update. Anybody regret doing it, for any reason? I wouldn't think so, but just checking.

Unless anyone can give me a good reason why I shouldn't, I'm gonna order the following:

2    WLED 5-LED Wide Angle LED bulb    in blue for the gauges (My speedo light went out, that's what's prompting this order)

1    WLED 1-LED bulb in red for the oil light

1    WLED 1-LED bulb in blue for the high beam light (also burnt out)

2    WLED 1-LED bulbs in green for the turn signal light and the neutral light

Does that look right to everyone? Also.. did we ever figure out the polarity issue for the turn signal light? I know one person had issues where the light only worked for one direction of turn signal, due to the polarity of the LED... is there an unpolarized one I should be looking for instead?

Thanks for the help guys.

Looks okay to me.  I think your combination will work well for you.

I personally like the 6-LED Wedge bulbs I have under the Low Oil Pressure, Neutral and Turn Indicators, but found putting on under the High-Beam position to be too intense.  (ref: Unfinished Business - LED High Beam Indicator (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33547.0)).  I like the intensity, easily visable in the brightest sunlight.

But that's just me. I want to see those other indicators when they appear, and should rarely be on at night.  But running at night with the High-Beam on, the contrast is fine if there's only one LED under the BLUE plastic.

That single LED, the one you want to put in for all your indicators, is still easily visible in bright sunlight.  Just not intense, and that should be fine.

My Gauges have the WLED-x5 LED BLUE radial, wide angle wedges.  I like the look.

Go for it.   :thumb:

NGFL - that would work.  generally you want an led bulb that's the same colour as the lense, but it's not that critical in this application.  I just got the brightest I could find that physically fit, in white for all 4 and they are fine.  nice and bright - brighter then stock for sure.  For the turn signal - yes, you need a non polarized 1 to work.  I just ended up getting all 4 the same (bright and non polarized) and just fine.  As far as the gauge cluster - wide angle will work.  I ended up getting the new high power leds - they don't have a traditional bulb like in common led's - when off, they look like a flat circuit board and have a heat sink just under the surface.  while they use about 1 watt (which may negate a bit, the move to them if your trying to be as efficient as possible electricity wise), they are brighter then most i've seen.  no regrets at all for me.

I'm actually trying to find my old bulbs, so I can remove the LED ones...  if I find 'em, they're up for grabs...  pretty cheap.

Can someone post a picture of what the stock bulbs look like?  I don't remember what I'm supposed to be looking for.

Has anyone tried UV for the guages? The white and red look like they should fluoresce....

When I did mine, the green leds I used were not bright enough, it was fine driving around the city at night and looked great, but out in the country without any other lights, I couldnt see the needles. I ended up adding a UV led to the bottom of the gauge, and now the needle glows a neon orange.

where I drilled the hole for the led

and a crapy camera picture of the gauges, I had to play with the brightness and contrast of the picture to get a better view, but it does look sweet in person

Well I got the LEd, and I am dissapointed, the wled-5 for teh guages where a perfect fit, the wled -6 for the indicators are far from being even remotly (even with trimming the wedge by half it size it just doesnt fit in the socket...

now this is a 2005, and obviously the indicator bulbs are very different from previous years...

well no worries, what I truly wanted what the blue gauges, and that worked,

Average, do they look like this?

Hopefully a lot less fuzzy (low light, inexperienced operator).
