Title: Some questions and thoughts
Post by: j!m on April 20, 2007, 01:46:59 PM
Had my gs500 for 2 weeks now and i can't stop thinking about it ( the wife is NOT happy ) But you know , i just want to take it to pieces and do stuff . Some guys on here have inspired me to get stuck in . So it has me thinking .
A respray , what colour ? olive green , red , black all over with chrome bits ( or gold bits ) .
New seat , same as or a single and how much will that cost .
A rejet , new filter and what else while i'm at it .
Tyres , how big can the back one be ?
Can i take the crank case of and not get bits all over the floor .
How do i remove stickers from tank ect .

So many missions going round my head and it's not even summer yet . I need the bike everyday so i must wait till winter .

I work on cnc lathes and mills and will leave the bike at work for 3 months and i'm thinking of a complete strip and redress . Am i mad and should i be more realistic as i am a sh-t hot engineer but know little about bike's .

We have a chrome guy and powder coating workshop round the corner so it would be nice to use them .

Thanks for your time .   jim

Good god, I wish I was in your situation.

This bike is great to tinker with. You may as well get it out of your system. I mean its not like we could convince you NOT too, now could we?

Well, your top priorities should be:

1)  Riding and improving your riding skills (Quick stops, cornering, etc, etc).
2)  Learning when to stop talking about motos around your wife (if you figure it out, can you teach me?)

Then...  Performance mods:

1)  Better front springs (Progressive or RaceTech (or similar straight-rate springs)).
2)  Kat6 rear shock (Or another that fits with both pre-load and rebound adjustments).
3)  SV Gen 2 Mirrors ('cause the stock GS mirrors SUUUUUUCK!).
4)  Better grips, I like the ProGrip 719.   :thumb:
5)  Rejet (either for stock pipe or get a new pipe too).
6)  Maybe a 15T front sprocket, if you want some more pickup and don't mind higher revs on the highway.
7)  Ignition Advance.
9)  Pods or K&N air filter.

Bling and Looks:
1)  Cut that ugly giant rear fender (if it's still there).
2)  Smaller and Brighter LED turn-signals (or maybe just shorten the shocks).
3)  LED lights for Dash and Dials.
4)  Paint?  Only if it needs it.
5)  Rear-Hugger ('cause they look good and it keeps some dirt off your new rear shock)
6)  Metal Pegs (CBR?  I can't remember which one... Pablo's site has info)

Random crap I'm too lazy to do and probably never will.
1)  Fork/Front-End swap with inverted forks and dual-brakes.
2)  Rear wheel swap so you can run a 150.
3)  Wash the GS.

The sky is the limit.  Don't spend money on paint and appearance, spend it on speed.  Bore it out, ditch all that "extra" crap that adds weight, turn a new crankshaft, new rods, new cams, 4 valves, lightened gearing etc. etc. etc.  Just remember:

Speed costs money.  How fast do you want to go?   :)

Err...  Let's edit that...

Speed costs money.  How fast will your wife let you go?    :thumb:

Just as fast as mine will...  Thus we own GS500s.
