Hey everyone, one week ago I picked up my first bike, a 92 GS500 with 7900 miles! 8)
I just ordered a repair manual, through gstwin amazon link :thumb:
The stock handlebars were bent slightly so of course that gave me an excuse to upgrade, so I ordered a pair of SM2 bars, hoping for better comfort, and more aggressive leaning position. Being 6'2, I'm practically sitting straight up with the stocker's.
Now, there is an annoying problem at this point. I am leaking quite a bit of oil from the left side of the bike. I'm hoping it's just a gasket. Here is a pic of where I am getting oil leakage. (note, this is not my bike)

What is that cover called? And what is it... covering? Also, would anyone happen to have a part number for that gasket and anything else I need to keep in mind, when replacing it?

Awesome :thumb: Welcome to the GS world. :thumb: I'm 6' and i was pretty much straight up with the stocks. i went to clip ons though, and got a pretty aggressive position :thumb:
How much oil do you consider a lot??
Yup probably just the crankcase gasket
Remember, bikes don't leak oil they mark their territory :laugh: never had to replace it so I have no clue what is entailed but some of the more senior members who've been tinkering with these bikes for a while should be able to step-by-step it for ya
That's the clutch cover I believe, It should be fairly straightforward to change out that gasket, but I'd wait for your manual to arrive before taking it off. It's always nice to have pictures.
You should also just try tightening the bolts a little bit to see if that stops the leak. Just don't break the bolts.
Actually DON'T just tighten the bolts. :nono: I did that and CAUSED a leak where there wasn't one.
I was just going over the bike a tightening stuff. I thought the case bolts were a little loose so I tighten them - bad idea. I think they are supposed to be just snug. So I pinched or crushed the gasket and it started leaking. :o
Do a little more checking about this.
I'm having issues getting my clutch side cover off now so i'm doing a bit of searching through old topics. Found one from when I was having the same issue. Also the charging system is under that side cover. The clutch is under the other side cover. Hope this helps

Thanks for the tips everyone, my repair manual has been shipped, so now all I have to do is go get the gasket. What is that gasket called?

Magneto? as in.. the xman? haha I'll be heading to the dealer tomorrow to pick it up. hopefully my manual will be here soon. Is there a how-to or possibly a good write-up on installing the SM2's?

By the way, those handlebars in the photo are NOT the stock bars. They are way too low to be stock.
The gasket you are seeking is simply a left sidecover or magneto cover gasket:
It's item No. 15 in this schematic from Ron Ayers shop online:

The Suzuki part number is 11483-44110 (but check on this with the dealer)
The price should be about $6.54 according to that site.
Hopefully your dealer stocks it.
It's not bad to replace it but you will need some good tools, including a hammer-driven hand impact driver to safely remove the phillips head screws without damaging them.
You should drain the engine oil first and of course replace the oil filter and oil as part of the job. Always replace the copper gasket on the engine oil drain plug and the rubber gasket around the oil filter, which you have to buy separately at the dealer.
Use good quality oil, such as Castrol GTX 10-W40. 3.1 quarts to refill the engine.
Take it easy and ask questions here. That's how you learn.

If you buy the Fram oil filter it comes with the rubber o-ring/gasket included. But I don't have the filter # with me :dunno_white:If you can get ahold of Kerry one of the moderators for this forum he will be able to get it for you.

Prettymuch a straight bolt on. Minor issue of the master cylinder hitting the tachometer housing, but I think most people just rotate it back out of the way a bit. Seems like most people switch out their grips to something comfier/prettier when they do their bars, too.

Thanks for the link Jen but I wish you wouldn't have told me aobut the grips, now I'm going to have to upgrade mine too haha! :laugh: What are some bolt-on, no mods required replacements? Also, I seem to remember someone mentioning having to purchase new grip ends, is this required?
And lastly, where would be a good place (autozone, advance, walmart?) to get a filter, and does anyone know the part # for our bikes?
