I just got the new-to-me 1990 gs500e with 16,200 miles on it. It was running great ( or so I thought ) till I started really listening to things. I noticed the high idle and this is a california bike by the way, as soon as it would warm up. I played with the throttle, read all the threads, and finally just said screw it and tore it all down to carbs! Well, after I took it all apart, it appears to have been two things working in conjunction with each other. it appears that the bottom two tubes that come out of the bottom of the carbs and connect to a single "T" fitting, broke. One was fitted in perfectly and appeared to be air tight, the other piece is broken and I have now jb welded it back into place in hope of it not rattling off and breaking. The only other option at this point is to buy a new carb and if I do that I'm buying two of them and throwing them on brand new. Not to be pessimistic, but does anyone know where I can buy a set of carbs cheap???
Hi there,
Check your IMs.
I just sent you one about some spare carbs I have for sale.
yours,
Todd
OK Huge river of sarcasm begining to flow at this point ...
Oh yea JB weld ... yea ... It'll hold ... :cookoo: ...
That fittings that comes out and goes to a T fitting and then to 1 rubber line ... Yea you absolutely need that too .... :cookoo: ... that's why they put it on the CA carbs only ... that's when you know the CA bikes make more power ... I should know, I have lived in CA for 7 years and owned 4 of these fine CA examples.
Sarcasm Off ... true advise follows.
OK dude, the thing that broke off ... Big deal, you dont need it. Yank the lines off, and plug that other tube too. These are the things in the front under side of the carb right ??? Yep, dont need it. The rear lower side is the fuel inlet, the rear top side is the air inlet (plug that and see how fast your carbs vacuum lock and the bike dies. Front left carb right side upper side is the vacuum line and the tops have caps on the synch spigot and O rings under that fitting to keep air out.
You get the caps removed on the air screws set it to 3, set floats to the height of the gasket, put a #4 under the needle and put 125/40 jets in it if its all stock. Just like any other state bike. Ignore the one you broke.
Cool.

Wow, thats awesome. I didn't realize I could just plug them though. I actually fixed it and the idle doesn't hang anymore at this point. I never thought I could tear the whole bike apart and put it back together in an hour and a half either. These things are awesome after working on cars. As for now it still hangs a little teeny bit from about 2k down to 900pm at idle. Next time I tear into it though, I will go ahead and remove those lines and the can as well. Would it be worth it to get a decent filter set instead of that stock piece of crap. That is one mother to get put back on the carbs by yourself.
adjust your idle up to about 1300 RPM.
Open up your mix screws to 3 if you are running all stock jets. Heck more like 4.
The airbox ... its easy to put back on, however you are going to have to take the filter out and get your hand inside it and get it out and over the mouth of the carbs.
And yes clean your filter by dunking it in gasoline and sloshing around, then dry it and put it back into the bike.
Cool.
