- '98+ Katana with little modifications.
- '99-'02 SV650 if you swap the bearings from 20mm to 17mm bearings
- Bandit 400 (all years) with little modifications, although spacers will need to be machined

You can, but it isn't approved by most manufacturers. Most manufacturers suggest a 4.5" wheel preferred, or a 4.0" at the VERY minimum. Continental RoadAttack is approved for the 3.5", and a few others are, though I don't remember exactly which brands and models.
Gotcha..I just new that some would fit. The last GS I had run through my hands had a 150 on the back but it was a Continental tire I think.

Using the Bandit 400 wheel really does best with a B4 cush drive. The GS drive fits but the B4 drive is a little wider which adds clearance between the chain and tire. The B4 hub is narrower than the GS, eventhough it is a wider wheel.

Add the 3.5" GS500 wheel to the list, works just fine for me. No mods to install except to bend the brake rod a bit for some, not required on others. My 150/70 Road Attack looks nice on the GS wheel doesn't it, works even better than it looks:

Your previous guides listed a 3.5" rim as suitable for your 150/70/17 ContiForce tire. Since the RoadAttack came out you show a 4.0" minimum rim width for both the ContiForce and RoadAttack tires in the 150/70/17 size.
I'm interested in trying the RoadAttack and wonder if it is a less suitable fitment than the Contiforce was on the 3.5" rim. A number of tire makers approve this fitment like the Z6, Diablo Strada, and BT020 for example. I'm running a 150/70/17 Lasertec now and am quite satisfied with the performance but would like to get the longer tire life I previously got from Metzler and Avon sport touring radials.
My local tire supplier has the RoadAttacks at a favorable price and I have been seeing very good reviews on them. Would much appreciate your views on this fitment.

Just checking the tire mfg pages you will find approval for the 150/70 on the 3.5" rim for the BT020, Z6, and Strada sport touring radials. It is a standard fitment for 150/70 bias ply tires on 3.5 rims including Demons and Lasertecs. The BT45 H rated is approved while the V rated is not.
I have never seen Avon approve general fitment of their 150/70 radials on 3.5 rims but if you check their fitment guide for the 89-97 Katana 750 you will the 150/70 Azaro ST recommended. Likewise they suggest the 150/70 Storm on the 91-97 VX800. Both fitments on 3.5" wheels.
Can't think of any 150/70/17 tire that I wouldn't try on the standard GS rim if I wanted to try the tire.
None of the tire mfgs approve the 150/60 on the 3.5 rim in the US, you'll have to go abroad to find approval. Guess we have too many lawyers here. :laugh:
Don't forget a 150/70 is sized for their prefered fitment on 4.0" rims so they will be 5mm or .2" narrower than specs on a 3.5" wheel.

4.5", just like the '03 Katana wheel. '98+ Katana rims are all the same, and the '99 SV650 uses the same wheel with different bearings.

Well, since it is a 1998 Katana wheel, and there is a picture in there that shows it is a 4.5" wide rear rim, then yes, it will work, just like I said earlier.

I have not read that FAQ in awhile but if it does not mention it....get a 98+ Kat caliper hanger as well. Basically the same as the GS but it will fit the smaller rotor better.

So , when i got my new back tire the guy at the shop changed my 130/80 with a 130/70 . He told me it was lower profile , and while it does seema little less squirrelly in the back , it still breaks loose when i use to much engine braking . I REALLY at least want a 140 , but dude told me it wouldn't fit my stock rim . From what you guys have said , I CAN get a 140/70 to fit ??? I'd kinda rather not have a continental though ... anyone else have <$100 brand suggestions for semi-aggressive sport-riding ?
Yes a 140 will fit. I have several wheels with 140s mounted.
A lot of people have been raving about the Michelin Activ. Not sure of the price but something to look into.
I can't personally verify, but I just got a look at a hyosung gt250, and I'd swear it was a kissing cousin with the gs500. The frame and swingarm look identical, and it has a 4" rear wheel with a 150/70 stock.

Many are using the 140/70 rear on 3.5" rims on both the GS and EX500s. The new Activ 140/70 is $110, Demon is $99, BT45 is $92, and the new Avon Roadrider is $73 plus shipping from AMT, I checked there for comparison.
Until now the prefered rim width for both 140/70 and 150/70 tires has been 4.0" with the 3.5 rim being an approved fitment for bias. Now both Pirelli Demon and Avon Roadrider are designing the 140/70 for a 3.75 rim making the profile very close to preferred shape for both the 3.5 and 4.0 rims, I like that idea.
A couple members here are now trying out the new Roadriders but they are too new to tell how good they will be yet. If the performance/life of the Roadrider is close to the others, it will be a real bargain. The Lasertecs and Activs are getting too close to radials in price.
I wore out a pair of Avon AM51/52 tires year before last and found them to have a good life for the price but the handling was a bit below the others in aggresive riding, also not bad for the price though. I would expect the new Roadriders from Avon to be better in the handling department since they don't have that wierd square shape on the rear that the AM52 had.

Recent raves about the Activ tires have brought new interest in these tires. One thing about the Michelin tires I've found annoying is the lack of data on the Michelin site. No mounted tire dimensions, no rim widths specified, seems they want the buyer to have to contact the dealer for this info.
For anyone interested in this info I've found some Michelin data sheets at the Motorace site. The point of interest here in discussing tire and rim fit sizes for the GS is the preferred rim width for the 140/70/17 Activ is 3.5" and not 4.0" as most all previously were. Could be we have some GS/EX500 riders at Michelin. :thumb:

Your welcome, but it's not as much work as my long winded posts might indicate. I keep up to date on tires that can be used on my bikes, keep a pile of the data sheets printed from the mfg tire sites on hand, and pick up the print copies of the tire guides from Metzeler, Pirelli, Avon, and Dunlop that have fitment guides and tire dimensions at the bike show every year. Can check and/or confirm memory quickly.
No, a 150/70 on a 3.5 wheel would not be out of whack; the shape would just be slightly off from the optimum and in my opinion it would take a very good rider to tell the difference.
I agee with the generally held belief that all other thing being equal the OEM size tires will probably give the best handling. But all other things are not equal when you have a 3.5 wide rear wheel. Sport touring radial tires generally come in a minimum 150/70 width and supersport tires come in a 150/60 minimum width so it's necessary to compromise on the fitment a bit to get the superior features of these radial tires.
Well worth the compromise in my opinion and I was real happy with the 150/70 Lasertec I used last year and am even happier with my current 150/70 RoadAttack. Tires I've used on the GSs:

Well Jack , I went up to the shop and we finally decided on a 140/60 . It's definately smaller than i wanted , but it had a lot more rubber on the ground than what I currently have AND I won't have to modify the brake mount or chainguard . I'll post back after I get it once I know the brand , etc ... it's not one listed on your log . Whatever it was they get a good deal on ... they said it's Yokahama rubber made in China or Korea , but it's supposedly a LOT stickier than the Barracuda I currently have - just barely tapping the rear brake will lock my current one up with little to no noise , as it's a really hard compound . I RARELY ride on the highway , so the profile and the softer compound is what sold me . As i said , i'll update ya as soon as I get it (probably tuesday) . they also said if I didn't like it I could return it for 75% of what I paid if it's within a week or two . I'll probably move the rear brake brace out some and Dremel the chaingaurd to get the Conti-Road Attacks front AND back later this summer ... they look freaking cool lol (which shouldn't matter , but it does just a little for me hehe)
