Title: Muffler Mod...
Post by: fenderjonesy on April 27, 2007, 08:46:21 AM
Yeah I know this is a FAQ. But after searching through the topics of the past years...I have come to the conclusion that nobody agrees on anything.

I want to get my bike to be a little louder without needing to re-jet. I have never owned anything with carbs and wouldnt know where to start with rejetting, nor do I have the space to disassemble a bike and leave it while I change the jets. Also I do not want to go out and buy a new exhaust since I just dropped a bunch of cash on the bike itself. So my question is...if I drill out the baffle between the inner and outer lips of the muffler on a stock GS, will I be doing damage to the bike? Will it sound louder? Can I fix it back to stock after I do it if I hate the new sound? Does anyone have a sound clip of this mod? :dunno_white:

Thanks in advance for any info.

There's a lot of good sites available regarding jetting. Here's one that will tell you pretty much everything you need to know to get started:

http://www.4strokes.com/tech/carbover.asp

http://www.4strokes.com/tech/howtojet.asp

All of that information applies to pretty much any carburettor. I believe (someone correct me) that the GS has a CV carburettor and not a slide-type but the basic principles are the same.

Or ... you can rejet without changing the pipe ... rejet a stock bike ... that's the right thing to do.
Plan B:
Get 2 pairs of womens ankle sox ... slide one inside the other inside the other ... 4 layers deep, and put it over the air filter mouth and zip tie it into the thing so it cant come loose.
Then drill away at the muffler.
The intake is much more influential for jetting than exhaust, and you're choking the intake which already is pretty choked up and horribly lean, and opening up the exhaust.
Cool.
Srinath.

There is a sound bite of someone who drilled their stock exhaust.

try searching for it.  Might take a while but it could be found.  I remember a thread where someone was dissing the mod and someone came back and explained why they liked it and provided a sound bite.

If you want to drill holes in your exhaust, do it.  Understand though, that if you want a deeper, throatier sound, you need to remove a lot of material.  It's not enough to merely drill a few holes.  Yes, it will be louder, but still puttity-puttish.  I drilled holes, then removed the material between the holes.  The sound is deeper, throatier, and pleasing.  Also, you will need a rejet which is usually a first mod anyway, and installing K&N or Uni filters will help with the sound.  My bike is louder without being obnoxious.

Now, where to drill?  Well, if you look in the end of your exhaust, there is the large diameter outlet for show, and a smaller diameter pipe that is the actual outlet.  The metal between the inner outlet and the outer is the material you remove.

The picture is the work in progress, the exhaust I have now is all drilled, filed, and finished.  Sounds good, takes effort, and is a FREE mod.

So the bottom line is that I pretty much need to re-jet. I guess it never hurts to learn something about the bike by tearing it apart O0

I checked out the dynojet kits online...is there anything cheaper out there than $86?

Hey now...I really did look up the old posts...In fact the response with the picture above is an exact duplicate from an old post. Following those posts though travel in circles between, you can do this without a rejet and then go to you absolutely need a rejet. I was just seeing if by now any more info had dropped on the topic when other people have tried these mods.

lol I'm just messin w/ ya. I was talking about where to get the jets.

stay away from the dynojet kits. get mikuni jets from www.sudco.com (they only seel in sets of 4) or a dealer.
