Holy crap!!! 63 miles to the gallon right now. granted I havent been driving aggressivly, but shaZam!! beats the suburban anyday!. so happy! Normal is around 50-60 right?
Brad
welsome to low performance 500's.
I just did the math on my CX and pulled an even 65...and I ride at WOT everywhere...
it almost scares me that these are considered low performance. seems fast for me, but then first bike, and damn i love the mileage
Yep, I get 52 MPG at freeway speeds, 75-80 MPH indicated.
On easy back road rides I can get right at 63.
BeSafe
same i run about 80 on the highway and
i get 50-55 there
45-50 in town
Yes even 4 cyl bikes average 45+. Surprise of all, the maxim X - 5 valve water cooled and like a bullet compared to the air cooled regular 2 valve 700 CC maxim, gets better gas mileage ... like way better. Closer to 50 while the air max does 42-45.
Power isn't the only thing I guess.
Most GS'es I have had made 45-55. Especially after jetting it to run right.
Cool.
Srinath.
well anything is better than 14 around town and 16 as long as i stay under 70 on the suburban, so im extremly happy! oh and riding a motorcycle is quite possibly the coolest thing ever
yep.
anyone that calls a 500 'low performance' doesn't know how to ride, or just plain doesn't ride.
55+ mpg while doing it isn't a bad idea either :D
I am using relatively heavy oil (20W-50) for some reason, so my MPG is a bit low compared to light oil users.
My GS 2006 got 52 MPG in winter and 58+ MPG in summer on the same commuting route.
It seems the air temp affects MPG. Did anybody notice this?

Oh I'm sorry...I forgot about those high profile world grand prix races where GS500's are stomping ass on GSXR's, CBR's, YZF's and all the rest of those other bikes that are obviously in the same league as the 30 year old machinery and technology you're straddling.
Mine only gets about 38-40. Sigh. I really need to find out what's wrong with it. It's rejetted, but even so, it shouldn't be that low. And I ride pretty conservatively.
63 is unheard of for me. I probably average 38-45, cuz I ride aggro almost totally in city. 38-40 conservative on long roads or in stop n go?
I just got an 07 gs500f and the last tank i filled up i was getting 66mpg, NICE!
I get 50-55MPG on average... :thumb:
61 last tank ful, and i wasnt riding it soft this tank either. im lovin it!!
I drive mine like I stole it... and get at least 60 MPG.

ya, like they close the roads to cage traffic, buses, taxis, the odd helicopter, dogs, cats, rats and pigs so I can ride to work, just like when a race is on. you know, so i can really utilize all of the 156 RWHP of a superbike. oh, and ambulances at every turn, in case i case.
i mean really man, some people can really ride, and others don't consider anything 'high performance' unless the machine outpaces the human's thought process capability by 8 fold.
not to mention this wonderful little 30 year old piece of tech goes like snot when i twist it, all while achieving 55MPG as already attested.
I ride the bike really hard, and I can't get it below 50 on the street. My track GS averages around 30.
I filled up yesterday and calculated 55mpg. That tank had a lot of warm ups on it though, and some slow speed practicing for the obstacle course for my license.
I went on a 132 mile trip today (ouch my butt, arms, and shoulders ain't used to that yet!) which consisted of open highway, and mountain twisties, really a mixture of everything one could ask for, and I could only squeeze 1.8 gallon into the tank. 73 mpg!!! yeehaw!
hnh
Sixth Gear and under 70 mph = 58-63 MPG for me. Best I ever had was 69 MPG (6th and ~ 60 MPH)and worst was around 48 MPG (winter and a lot of short 10 minute trips). Engine is still stock, and see no reason to change it.
I have gotten 72 mpg on one trip. I rode 223 miles on my 05, never hit reserve cause normally I do on this particular strech. The ride consisted of about 2 hours 30 minutes super slab, and 45 minutes back roads. This means I maintained an average speed of around 69 mph, thats about right, and I used 3.1 gallons of gas. I about shat myself right at the gas pump when I saw this and then I hugged my little GS and flogged on down the road to my friends place.
I routinely get around high 60's and sometimes low 70's while commuting. the only time my mileage drops below 50 is when I putt around town and its stop and go, and I'm there before the bike really has a chance to have her morning bugs
so what should i check on my engine to help my MPG im getting about 39 MPG and thats alot of highway and crusin around 70 in 6th gear..
i think i should be checking for fouled plugs from running rich
float height check
valve shims in tolerance
anything else? and how can i sync the carbs?
also my engine is completely stock except for a K&N bolt in air filter which i put in about 1000 miles ago.
Thanks
Tim
