Title: In the heat of it all.... (DONE! :Now with links to pics)
Post by: natedawg120 on May 10, 2007, 01:48:35 PM
So I was putting spacers in my forks....all in GD if you want more, but i was looking at my bike and I had grown to dislile the stock decals. The tail stickers were faded bad, the right was faded a little and the left was faded more, mainled because I replaced the right after my encounter with a deer.  So me, a rag and a can of WD-40 set out on a mission to rid the gs of all the stickers.  I got them all off except the ones on the tank, didn't want to try because of the clear coat over them.  I like the looks better without the stickers, mainly because it doesn't look like the other couple black gs's i have seen motoring around b'burg.  The next thing that I am going to do, I think, is paint the gray side plastics black.  I still have the broken one to test with so I can get the best paint match possible.  I think  jet black F would be hot.........

All that being said we'll see how long it takes me to get lazy and like the looks of black on grey

I don't know what I would do without my mac now, stupid vista.......

After :

My only concern is the toughness of the paint, hopefully nothing major will happen for a month so I can put a thick coat of wax over it to further protect the finish.

they are all on my phone.  And me being a dummy forgot my trunk, aka bookbag.  So i was unable to get my laptop home from work.  Anyway it would have had to wait till tomorrow anyway cause i just remembered that i have vista and vista sucks at all things command line so i couldn't have gotten the pics on my sever.  I will put some up tomorrow morning.  Then if someone cold do a quick photochop, my computer exploded, to all black just so i could visualize it would be appriciated.

OK...  If the sides were black and the Red Stripe (Hurray!) was gone from the tank.......  That would look SWEEEET!

But...  Right now it looks like you crashed it and couldn't find matching bits to fix it.   :icon_confused:

Yeah I am thinking that I am going to paint it black.  The red stripe from the tank would be a pain cause i would have to pretty much strip the tank to get them off because Suzuki clearcoats over them.  Still I like the plain F better than the way it looked before, sun faded stickers .  Glad i have the extra fairing to paint black to paint match before I do the ones that count.  After i am done though I am going to spray chalk board paint on the one fairing that is damaged and hang it somewhere, I think that would be cool

got the paint.  It doesn't match the bike exactly because of the metalic flek paint on the bike.  Can't find a match.... I am going to spray the fairing black with a clear coat finish and we will see how it comes out.

you should polish the lips of the rims and get a red suzuki logo for the side fairings I think that would look pretty hot.

Just a curious question.  How long should I let the paint on the fairings set before I reinstall them on the bike.  I was thinking 3 days, then a month before any wax or anything goes on them but I am open to suggestions.  The finish is perfect as well, they should look great once they are back on the bike 8)

Just be careful at the gas station.  One drop will really make that paint start to bubble, wax or not.

Looks great, though!  Now you just need to get rid of that damn shovel!

Yeah, It was an automotive paint that I used so hopefully once fully cured it will be tough.  As for now I am pleased with the appearance.

Well in that case, it should be able to stand up to any solvent. :thumb:

Crap, I was at the gas station today.  As soon as I pressed the "87 Octane" button to select my fuel, the gas pump proceeded to spew half a galon of fuel ALL OVER my tank, frame, hot engine and leg.  I was...not happy...  Sooner or later, your tank is gonna get some gas on it.

Definitely don't wax this for 30 days!!!! Then try to find a silicone free wax only for the next 3 months...then you can go back to using any old wax.

thats what i thought, because of the clear coat.  I will have to see if I can find a silicone free wax, might have some here but would have to look.

Surely if you get a good clear coat, lacquer, gas shouldn't affect it at all. I was worried on my zxr because when we orginally sprayed a bike before we used a cheap clear coat and gas just turned the whole tank yellow when it got on it inevitably. We used a much better one afterwards and on the ZXR and i havnt had a problem since. Just use a good clear coat and you should be fine.
