Thoughts, concerns? I hope to look at the 650 this week and maybe trade with the owner. He's looking for a project and seems interested in my little gem.
I've heard the rectifiers on these can be issues. Any other experiences?
Frying pan to the fire eh ...
Cool.
Srinath.
if it runs, yes!
OK here it is in non srinath speak ...
I dont quite like them mid 80's suzuki standard/cruiser/sport bikes/touring bikes. You know, the kind that all looks the same but one is a cruiser and other is a sportbike ...
The bikes were big, tall and heavy as a pig. They made torque, torque and more torque. That 650 will weigh more than most current mega cruisers probably. G = shaft drive and it has a pronounced shaft jacking effect.
Mid 80's my choice is Yamaha followed by honda followed by kawi then suzuki.
A yamaha sport bike will be tall and very sporty (FJ 600, FZ 700 etc) a standard will be much lower and upright seating - Seca series or later radian 600. The maxim cruisers will be even lower and very cruiserish and be shaftie.
The motors are all bullet proof on all makes no question there, but the rest of the bike is what you have to go by. The G makes it a cruiser and I dont think it is a cruiser by any stretch of the imagination.
Cool.
Srinath.
this particular model is about 100 lbs lighter than the 850 with the same design. total weight is about 490 lbs. not much more than the GS. 75 HP inline 4, much more than the GS. the bike also has a fully adjustable front and rear damper and good brakes, disc in rear. it was faster than BMW and Moto Guzzi bikes of the same ilk and era and will see the 1/4 mile just over 12 secs. definitely quick enough for me! top speed of 120 MPH. with a top end limit at 9k RPM
so, the stats speak well for the bike.
i like these facts:
1) it's Japanese
2) it's a Suzuki so parts are cheap and help is plentiful
3) it runs
4) could make a good cafe conversion once life settles down and i have some time and experience under my belt.
Well ... the G is shaft drive - you definitely have that going for it too.
The thing is heavy, I dont think that 490 lbs is anywhere on the road, its measured at the salesman's desk. Its top heavy, its just plain heavy ... ride it, you'd swear it weighs more than the piece of paper says it does.
Cool.
Srinath.
cool. i'll check it out and report my findings!
new posting for the GS on CL

What year model is the GS650G? If it's pre-'84 it's going to have a paper valve cover gasket that you'll have to replace every time you check the valves. Unless, you enjoy scraping gasket...
i can handle that. it's an 82.
Just my Opinion I would Hold out for a GS750 if your going to go with 4 Cylinders.I don't know why but I've Just never Cared for 4 strokes less than 750cc. :dunno_white: of course I am a two Stroker at heart so I just don't care for 4 strokes in General unless it's around 1000cc.But if you do settle for the 650 let me Know if you need parts I may just have them. ;)
will do. i'm up for something that runs consistently. don't care much whether it's oil burner or not. a little style, a little handling, and a little power. that's all i need.

Dry weight for the GS-650G is listed as 470 lbs. Yes, 70 extra lbs. does qualify as
much more in the 2-wheel realm. Factor that into the handling. Plus the 19-in. front wheel. :o
And, 65 RWHP is a more realistic figure. Still respectable--I've ridden one, they scoot. Tech-wise, the engine is contemporary with the GS500, so no step backwards there (except for the paper gasket). And, like the GS500, the GS-650 evolved from a smaller ancester (the GS-550) so it gets the most out of its engine cases. And, at 673cc's, it's a
big 650. This bike also served as the platform for the XN-85 Turbo...so it has that lineage going for it.
But this is
not 1982...this is an OLD motorcycle in both age and design. It might be a worthwhile trade if you get a fully functioning motorcycle with good cosmetics, and you don't mind being stuck in a time warp with
Duran Duran.. Men At Work.. The Go Go's.. Quarterflash.. Tootsie.. Tron.. Gandhi.. Bladerunner.. Eye Of The Tiger.. Roseanna.. Physical.. Toni Basil.. Dexy's Midnight Runners.. John Belushi.. valley girls.. the Betamax.. headbands.. the Falkland War.. etc. :icon_razz:
Too bad it's not the GS-650M Katana; that would be kinda cool. 8)
hows that bike compared to a gr650?
Can I throw a little Depeche Mode in there for good measure?

...you MUST!!!!!!
I love DM...and "just can't get enough"...:kiss3: :kiss3: :kiss3:
simon.
GR650's are 2 cyl. They look like a GS500 motor in a GS450 like body. Love to have one some day but hey, a GS550-1000 I wont touch with a 100 foot stick. The GS1100 and 1150 I dont mind. The small ones are too heavy the bikgger ones are heavy and ill handling and none of them are cool. 1100 and 1150 are cool.
That vintage and genre I'll buy Yamaha's all day. XJ 550 - 650 - 750, then maxim 700 84-88, Radian 85-92, seca 92 and up, through 1100 who cares if the pre 83's had tranny trouble. Flip them over and dremel them ... Honda comes next IMHO. Nighthawks.
IMHO, the air cooled maxim, radian, FJ may be the bike that had the fewest design flaws. I have heard starter clutches are hard to get out but someone told me of a shortcut. I'll know with my seca in a few months.
Cool.
Srinath.
lol ive got a gr650 but ill be damned i can barely find the parts i need for it
I had an 82 model GS650GT. I loved that bike.
It was a bit top heavy but I didn't care. If I could find another one, I'd buy it.
The GT was the standard model and with a Plexistar II style windshield it was great.
