Title: With your help, I won't die...not yet, anyway... And who is this smiley????
Post by: smoker on May 15, 2007, 10:11:26 PM
Probably should spend some money on a new helmet, since I bought the cheapo $50 guy they had at the store, painted it flat black and have been using it for 5 years yet, haven't needed it yet!!!  Anyone have any opinions about quality, reasonably priced skull savers?  Is a helmet a helmet?... Or is there a big difference between my $50 deal and the $300-$400 ones I'm looking at in catalogs?...  And why do I get that purple smiley when I type a bunch of question marks is a row?  Watch????????????????????????????

I got myself a KBC VR-2 helmet.

When I had my fall it hit the ground very hard yet I didn't feel a thing and it held together really well, just a few scratches.

So I bought another.

Get the one that fits you best.

Fit indeed, if it doesn't fit your head shape, not going to work as well.

Beyond that, the Scorpion helmets seem to have about the best bang for the buck. For $140 the exo-400 has an anti fog visor, easily removable/washable liner and good venting, which you usually have to spend $300+ to get.

Like everyone said the most important thing for the helmet todo is fit your head and be comfortable.  Try a few on walk around the store with the helmet on for a about 30 min see how you like it.

The reason I say 30 min is because there have been a few times when I tried on helmets and thought " Hey this is a great fit"  but after about 30 min I would start getting a headaches.  When I took the helmet off I noticed two red sports on my temples when I took off the helmet.  I probally just have a big head

everything i have read would say if it fits get a scorpion, I don't know one person that was not happy with theirs.
If you can wait scorpion has their new helmet comming out soon the 1000 series.

+1 Scorpion. There are probably better helmets... for more than twice the price. Not that it's perfect.

Maybe I've just been lucky, I ordered my first helmet (Icon Alliance in XL) without trying one on, it fit fine (had other weaknesses, but it fit).

Every other helmet I tried until the Scorpion, it was the XL that fit. Tried the Scorpions in the dealer (would have bought one if they'd had solid colors), and it was the XXL that fit. The XL was REALLY tight. Having ridden with the Scorpion XXL for a month or so, I'd guess it's a little looser than the Icon XL was, but I still think the Scorpion XL was way too tight.

Of course, if I change my mind later, with the Scorpion I can just buy a liner in the smaller size.

Yeah, scorpions seem to run a size smaller than most other helmets. I took an XL in scorpion and a L in about everything else I tried on.

Intresting, Arai, shoei and KBC helmets are XL for me, scorpion exo400 was a nice L.

About the Icon alliance helmet, I have one of thosem yep in Xl as well you mention, its a nice fit, but you may find it is actually noisy and hot (well in texas in summer it is) plenty of vents but those make more noise, overhall happy with it, got it from newenough sale... well worth th 59.99 I paid for it

I love my Scorpion, but their sizing is a bit different, so try 'em on! I usually wear an XS helmet, but I wear S with the Scorpion.  :thumb:

As for "who" it is, it's Pandy. It's purple, and that's her most typical expression reading our stuff...
