1. the 97

...because naked is better (looking and less stuff to break when you inevitebly drop it), and You'll have money left over for protective gear (helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, pants)

1) The Naked!! Cheaper, Looks Better , And If U Dump It , Dont Have To Worry Bout Expensive Fairing Replacement , And If You Do Dump The New One, Ud Probs Have To Convert It Anyways ,

+1 on the '97 for all the reasons above.  :icon_mrgreen:

P.S. Helped ya' out with the poll. You have to start the thread, and then after you've posted it, go back in and add a poll....at least that's how MY buttons work.  :icon_mrgreen:

OK... I'll be the first to say 04  :flipoff:  I don't know, I like it better.  Either is a good buy, mileage is good on both, so it just matters on how much you feel like spedning(or how much you can justify spending)

Well, I saw my first naked GS today and I have to say that it looked like a toy.  My GSF looks much more like a real bike than the naked which looks like something you'd pick up at Canadian Tire.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, right. Plastic with cheap swooshy decals, that doesn't look the LEAST bit toy-like... keep saying it, maybe you can convince yourself.  ;)

:icon_mrgreen: I'd go the 500F  :thumb: it is all personal preference... but I like the front headlight and top bit of the faring setup... the side faring I can take or leave  :icon_rolleyes: probably more leave

The designer of the upper fairing should be shot. Very unappealing, especially in these days with the resources for design.

if you like the F better go with it .i like my F  i think the side panels for the F are 160 or so give or take . i like mine just fine ... i'll stick with the F :)  but they do have a point . its your first bike . its best to get one that if you damage it . it wont cause to much pain to your wallet . and if you have the money for the F then buy the E ( naked) and use the rest on good gear and maybe a mod or to for the old GS :)

PARTY NAKED PARTY NAKED PARTY NAKED!!!!!!!!  O0 :thumb: I'm with the fellow who's says 'naked and black you'll never go back'    Both have low miles, and with the money you'd save, you could get all kinda goodies to make you're little "toy?"  a 'smoker' just like me!  hehehehe...
But personal preference, really.  I love the DL650 (v-strom) will be my next scooter when I can afford it, and almost everyone thinks it's ugly as hell!!  It is, but I could ride one of those for 5 days straight, where my little gisser gets me sore after a few hours.  But I love how she looks.  If you're gonna buy a plastic fast looking faired bike, it probably should at least be fast (not knockin' the GS, but she's not really a road burner....)

if i am spending over 3k i am getting at least a 600cc bike.
i know it looks cool but for that money i want 2 more cylinders.

thats my 2 cents O0

Hmm...
as an E (happy,so far) owner I stick with the naked.
(with my utter respect for F owners/supporters ;))
Choose what you like, first of all...
I can see that most folks around here are "naked" supporters, and in my opinion the GS was born to remain a naked, the added fairings contrast with smallish tyres (front especially)...even though they can provide air protection to your body.
Anyway,I'll say again:
choose the bike you like most. :thumb:
Happy choice,and ride safe! :thumb:

I say fairing bike, I am bias like every one else that are voting,
The fairing takes a whole 2 mins to come off.

As for a 97 vs 04,  a 97 will have issues that a 04 will not have.
Just a question of how it was maintained before you get it.
I
f the bike is just for joy riding and not something more substantial (dont need it to ride to work every day with it)  then get the 97, its cheaper, and if you drop it, you would cry about the body kit getting  damamged.

im going to see the 1997 tomorrow since I finally have some time off to drive down..i spoke to the guy and it seems that the bike has been sittin there (Outside under a cover - in NJ) for about a yr..what kind of issues could i expect and what should I look out for when inspecting the bike???  how hard will it be for a newbie to get this thing running decently?

If it doesnt run Right , walk away , why spend all that time and money , when u seem to have a good budget ,

I can think of Dead battery , Sticky Carbs , etc

stuff you wont want to deal with

My Opinion anyways

Watch for rust too, if it's been outside, though a decent cover should protect it pretty well.

Try everything you can find to make sure it all works: Engine obviously, brakes, transmission, lights, blinkers......

But yeah, if it's visibly in bad condition or doesn't run well, may want to walk
