Title: Engine reving?
Post by: CurtWeatherbee on July 23, 2003, 08:53:45 PM
I just took the carbs apart and cleaned them up, after the bike sat unridden for two years.

I started it up and it was idling way too fast.  Around 5k.

I adjusted the carbs with the adjustment screw sticking down between the carbs until it was idling around 1200 rpm.

When I rev the throttle and let go, the engine revs up to 5k again by itself.

Does anyone know what causes this?  Is it a stuck float?

I can adjust the screw and bring the revs back down, but then it stalls out.

I'm just getting started on working on the bike myself, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Curt -

One possibility is that the carbs are out of sync.  Carb sync tools can be had for about $40, or you can make your own.  See the following post:

Carb syncing seemed to solve my high idle.  Hope this helps.

Throttle sticking?  make sure it snaps back to closed position on its own.  Thats all I can think of.

And it's too lean. Stock jetting/factory settings. Pull the brass plugs over the mixture screws in the towers forward of the float bowls, and replace pilot jets with size 40 non-bleeder type pilot jets.

Dang, you guys are quick.

I was thinking of doing an actual carb rebuild, so I probably try all of your suggestions when I do that.  The throttle seems to be moving fine, I made sure that was well lubed.

One other hint, I am getting a lot of gas drainage out of the over flow.  I don't know if this happens out on the road or just when it's idling.

Thanks again for the quick responses.

floats are sticking, or debris is getting inbetween the float needle and the seat causing to stick open (oh, I just said that), or the float height needs to be adjusted.
