Title: Weird sound
Post by: liljon140 on May 19, 2007, 11:20:37 AM
OK I have an odd sound while my bike is under a load.  It is a kind of grinding sound but not in my motor.  I can put it on the center stand and run it in neutral with no sound but when i put it in gear i get aliitle bit of  the noise just not as loud as if I were riding it and the chain seems to jump a good bit as the sound occurs.  I think it is my front sproket and chain  as I noticed some wear on my front sproket when i cleaned it up last week.  I  have noticed the sound much more since I cleaned all of the gunk out if it.  i have 14500 miles on my bike could i possibley need a new sproket and chain this soon.  My rear sproket looks good.  I am not good about oiling my chain I know maybe every 1200 miles or so. (yeah I know I suck, im an electrician not a mechanic)    any thoughts would be great and if any of you know where I can get a new chain and sproket or at least what part # and sizes that would be great thanks.   Oh and I have not noticed any loss in power I dont know if that matters but I thought i throw that in there.   Thanks

Jon

Funny you should post this.  I just started having the same thing happen.  I also get a little bit of a thumping that I can feel im my left foot peg when I'm rolling along and pull the clutch and coast.  I just pulled the wheels and had new tires mounted.  I'm thinking that maybe when I re-mounted the rear wheel I didn't align it properly and the sound and thumping is the chain catching the sprocket teeth a little.  I am also noticing a good bit of chain jump as well.  I'm going to have a look at it this afternoon and check out the alignment.

I just ordered new chain and rear spkt from BikeBandit.com.  OEM is 520-110 chain, 16t. front spkt., 39 t. rear.  Might  as well drop a tooth in the front and get the 15 if you're changing it out anyway, will give you better acceleration at the expense of a few mph lower top end, if that tickles your fancy.  I'm currently running a 15t. front with the 110 stock chain.  When my 44t. rear comes in, I need to step up to a 112 chain...  I posted about this recently (SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH BEFORE U POST OR U'LL PISS OFF PEOPLE HERE, just a tip).  I'll see if I can find it for ya and link it....

Sounds like you probally need a new chain and maybe new sprockets.

Check your chain tension though, it soundl like you may have too much slack and if you tighten it up it may help.

Thanks for the suggestions.   I think I will change the front sproket and chain and give that a try.  Is there any brand that should just be avoided or recommened over another.   I dont want to put a $200 chain on a $2000 bike you if you know what i mean.  Also is there any website recommend over others I do not use EBAY.

Thanks
Jon

Just go with a Good Quality RK,Regina or DID Heavy Duty Chain. :thumb:
