A while ago i had issues with petrol dripping from a pipe near the right footpeg . I thought this was overfilling the tank but the bike has been running very poor and as i got to work last week i just had enough . With no money to get some oik look at it i took the plunge and started to take my baby to bits . The bike runs hot and is starved of fuel after 2 mins or so . I have never taken a bike apart esp the carbs . I found the pipe that was leeking fuel came from the bottom of the air box . Ive removed the fuel filter under tank and thats fine . Checked the fuel lines and taps , changed oil and filter and replaced new plugs . Then to the carbs :o . The left diaphragm is a bit kinked round the edges and is harder than the right one , should i change that ? There are no holes in it . Cleaned out the float bowls , just awaiting new o rings and gaskets . Thats where i'm up to so far and for a first time take apart i'm impessed with myself at taking the plunge . It's not scary but i do hope it works ok when it's back together . Is there anything else i should be looking at while it's in several pieces ?

Was it pure gasoline or was it oil+water+gas+ carbon.
Pure gas is a over flowing float. The latter is blow by, and if its never been cleaned in its life it may be a 1 time deal sorta. It has to be drained every few 1000 miles atleast.

Im with srinath on this one...my 96 was doing the same thing. basically it would drain all the fuel out of the airbox breather hose while it was parked..It turned out to be that my boots on the carbs were bad and junk was keeping the floats up..Replaced the boots and cleaned the carbs no more problems.

Either the airboots, or intake boots (on the intake side of the carbs), the rubber tubes that connect the carbs to the airbox. Or, the carb boots, the rubber tubes that connect the carbs to the head.
