Title: Things I have learned
Post by: sezemy on May 20, 2007, 01:49:45 PM
ok, so work needed to be done on my gs, namely new clutch plates, the gear selector rod replaced, new front and rear tyres, front and rear sprocket and a chain.  The wiring needed looked as also.  Well it is almost complete now and here are the things I have learned from it.

1.  If you end up with more bolts holes, it IS important to find where they went.
2.  The right tools are sometimes a necessity other times a 10 pence piece will do (clutch hub holder)
3.  The clutch hub is sharp and will cut you given half the chance
4.  To work on a bike you need a hell of a lot of swarfega
5.  Swarfega stings cuts   :icon_confused:
6.  The fringe thing(technical i know) around the right engine cover is important and if you rip it will make your bike leak oil
7.  However, the fringe can be fixed with a bicycle puncture repair kit.
8.  I did not have all the tools I needed, and not all stores stock them.
9.  If you trap the wiring for the ignition behind the clutch, disconnecting the wiring will not make it squeeze through and you will get frustrated and brake a connector.
10.  Girls can fit strong clutch springs
11.  The oil filter hub nuts are VERY fragile.
12.  Trying to seal the oil filter with fiber glass as appose to buying a new bolt is a BAD idea
13.  If you live 2 stores up in a tenement flat, take ALL your tools down with you.
14.  The rear brake caliper is hard to get bad onto the disc and using a hammer is not the way to go.
15.  Hitting your thumb with a hammer is very painful, knowing there is no-one else to blame is even worse
16.  The rear sprocket is very hard to get off and it is not a good idea to let the wrench slip as it is very pointy in several places
17.  Although I have learned a lot doing this it would probably been a good idea to get a mechanic
18.  People on this board are very helpful.
19.  The front sprocket is easy to get off, however it is very very dirty area and chain cleaner works well to remove this grime
20.  The grime can hold a penny in place - for me this was magic as I have no idea how it would get there.

So that is not everything I have learned but a good selection.

What have you learned while fixing your babies?
