Title: could this be the cause of my overheating?
Post by: flyingmachine on May 20, 2007, 06:31:27 PM
My bike would start up fine, but after about 10 minutes or so of riding, the throttle becomes unrresponsive, then eventually die on it's own.  After 5-10 minutes of waiting, it'll startup again.  I initially tried to fix it by upping the idle screw because it only idles around 900rpm, but that didn't really fix the problem since the idle will drop down later on it's own.  When I inspected the plugs today, I noticed they looked overheated according to the clymer manual.  As I gave the bike a careful once over (bought used a months ago, ran fine till last week), I noticed that the hose to the California only evaporative system are incomplete and are missing a bunch of hoses.  The interconnecting hoses on the carb fittings are missing, as well as the hose from the tank mounted vapor nipple to the roll-over valve.  Could the opening at the carb, which should normally have  gas vapor from the tank, cause the engine to rich too lean and overheat?  Either way, I'm heading to autozone to get some hoses, any idea what size they are?  thanks!

I don't know anything about the california emissions crap but I do know that any openings that aren't supposed to be on the carbs wouild cause them to suck air which would make the engine run lean and possibly overheat if it's lean enough. I would go get the hoses and fix that even if it's not the problem. I definately don't think having it unhooked could be a good thing without atleast plugging the holes up... maybe someone of better knowledge about the cali bikes could help you.

I have a cali bike and I removed all tha evap crap truthfully the bike did not need it. IMHO. the hoses that go to the carbs I just caped them and im also missing the hose on the left side of the tank(the other one was from the canister but now Its just usd as an overflow drain. just plug the two port on the carbs and see what happens. everyone will say the nike wont run or idle properly with out the charcal canister and all that mumbo jumbo but knowing what it does and why it is their its not that important unless your and environmentalist.
