I bought Avon45/46's after researching them a bit. Now 3200 miles later my front tire has a stripe all the way around it. I am assuming this is the front tread indicator. I thought these tires lasted longer than this. My back looks like a lot less wear but i know the front wears more.
How many more commuter miles do you think i have?

I took my AV45/46 tires off with 12,700 miles on them because the front was badly bevelled. Could have run them further till I hit the tread wear markers. Don't understand what you mean by "a stripe all the way around it."

The front tire wears out more? Is that just for the Avons? I thought usually you can go through 2 rears before the front wears out.
Hey GS-Jack, thanks for the response. I used your log to pick these tires which was why i am curious, like you said you had a lot more miles on yours than i have currently. I am not a good camera guy but here is 2 pictures. The strips are clean like they were just exposed and havent touched pavement yet because they are actually below the tread right now.

Focus isn't good on your pics but that looks like something cutting a groove in your tire. I had one of my 110/80 front tires that touched the screws that held the the mud flap on the bottom rear of the front fender on my 97 GS, they would hit the tire about where the marks are on your tire. I just turned the screws around and put the thin screw head on the inside and the acorn speednut on the outside and it never touched again.
That tire looks like it has a lot of life left in it yet.

That's just for the radials, front bias tires lasted longer for me. I never got 2 for one wear, but my bias fronts lasted about 12-14k miles and bias rears lasted maybe 8-9k miles. When I picked up the pace I had bias BT45 rears wearing out very fast and that was when I tried the Z4/Z2 radials. Front Z4 wore like this pic and when tread was about gone in the center of those cornering bevels I would take them off. Could have used them another year on the Florida roads (no curves:-) since there was a lot of tread left in the center of the tire:

This pic of a rear BT45 shows how the last rear BT45 I had was wearing out fast, it was more than half worn when I took it off at about 2k miles and put the first Z2 radial on that lasted almost 14k miles pushing it even harder. That BT45 was not worn flat in the center, wear was even all around and that's why I saved a pic.

All of the dozen front tires I've had on the 2 GSs wore very beveled and/or cupped for me except the Laser types which wore even all the way down. That's why I like the Laser type front with a sport touring rear radial combo. And yes, I know I don't pay enough attention to tire pressures over the life of the tires. :laugh:
Thats exactly how my BT45s are wearing. They are a little flat in the center but not to bad. I however have had them on the bike for a little over 7000 miles. I am going to replace them either later this summer or for next year because i think i am going to wear them to the bars this summer.
Thanks Jack, i believe you hit the nail on the head (pun intended). I laid my bike down the day i noticed this. I thought i heard something when i was riding but it went away. The mudflap looks a lot closer than it previously did.
