Title: Dealer recommended dust seals and fork oil.
Post by: ben2go on May 23, 2007, 08:56:03 AM
I went to day to get dust seals for my forks.
They showed me where they were discontinued.
89 to 99,but they have 2000 and up.Can I use
the newer model seals in my 89?They went on
to tell me how they run 5w fork oil in there race
dirt bikes and I should too.Why would they
recommend this?I told them I was using a tried
and true combo in my forks.Wouldn't the 5w be
to thin for the forks? Can someone shed some light?

Dust seals are generally the same for all years ... in fact I'd be surptised if fork seals are different between years.
The biggest thing IMHO ... clean clean clean clean clean ...
Then after you knock in the seals and fit it all back on, but before you put dust covers on, put vaseline inside there. fork gaiters also help but vaseline is the best preservative there is IMHO. Put gaiters on top and you will have them last a lot longer. The ocassional re vaseline thing will prolly help too.
Cool.

As for the fork oil, do you have stock springs?

The 5wt oil is used in the dirtbikes because they have long travel suspension and they're constantly nailing bumps so the thin oil helps them respond quicker.

The GS has a pretty short travel and is ridden on the streed so the thicker oil is better. 10wt is stock and I found that it rides better for larger people with 15 wt. New springs helps way more though.

I am rebuilding my forks and upgrading to Progressive springs and 15w oil.
I weight 205 pounds when I have my riding gear on.I consider myself a heavy
rider.
By the way, when i purchased my bike a few weeks back,it had set for a
long time. The guy I purchased it from, started it and rode around the
neighborhood. When I got it,I really get out and ride. So,the forks started
leaking and the bottoming out became worse.I noticed the dust seals(my
local dealer calls them wipers)were brittle and cracked. So here's what I'm
doing.Replacing the springs,seals,dust seals,all O-rings,spacers,and using 15w
oil.I bought the cheap Suzuki brand oil.Probably replace it later with a good
brand of oil.
Thanks for the tips and advice.Ben
