Title: crash!!!
Post by: afi1 on May 23, 2007, 09:46:11 AM
hi everybody.  i went down on the first of may  i was riding behind my parents and toped a hill, then woke up rolling!  we still dont know what happened.  the bike was totalled, and i was airlifted to the hospital for x-rays.  suprise to me and the doctors, i didnt have a single broken bone!  just a bade case of road rash.  i rolled a good 120 yards on the asphalt, and it sucked.  i was just going down the road and it was hot so i didnt wear my jacket or gloves like some squid.  god i wish i did!  check out the slideshow at my myspace:   http://www.myspace.com/andrewasaurus   thanks alot and wear your gear!!!

Riding without gear doesn't make you "like a squid"; It makes you a squid.

Glad to hear you're okay.  Be safe out there!  So no more GS for you?

Yup it was, look at the pics on his myspace

Glad you're healing up.  That rash looks pretty nasty.  Just curious, did your parents see anything or did the police figure out how it happened at all?

Man really sorry to hear about this. Looking at the bike and looking at you I'd say you're very lucky. Looks like you're healing up pretty quick. Insurance pay for anything? Anyway hope you get well soon!

Even if you're naked you'll still be hot. Mesh jackets (like the one you have) vent exceptionally well, especially when moving, while at the same time providing a lot more protection than wearing nothing at all.

Can you explain your thought process when you decided to not wear gear? I'm kinda curious, really.

Yup, even my cheap-ass Fieldsheer vents incredibly well even when only moving about 10mph :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

"cheap ass Fieldsheer" saved me when I wrecked last summer...all I have is some dirt to show for it too... ignore the part about the broken collarbone..even expensive leathers wouldn't have saved me there..

Sooo when ya'll refer to 'gear'.  I'm assuming helmet, jacket, gloves...what about pants and/or boots?  Anything else?  Newbie getting ready to purchase said 'gear' and trying to gather some info.  Anything to avoid, look for, yada??  Appreciate the assist!

Get as much as you can afford.

If I had to chose an order:
1. Helmet
2. Jacket
3. Gloves
4. Boots
5. Pants

+1.  I agree, but its hard to choose an "order", as they are all important.  In my opinion, gloves, jacket, helmet are a MUST on all rides.  That's not to say boots aren't important too, even tight fitting lace-up tennis shoes will come off in a minor accident and don't protect your ankles.

Combat boots, jungle   +1

As far as legs I found that the Icon feild leg armor works really well,  I got a set off ebay for like 60 shipped and they just strap on.  go from about 1 inch above the ankle to about 1 inch above the top of the kneecap :thumb: :thumb:

*EDIT*  here's the link to the one I bought   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&item=220108134235

PS... I love my fieldsheer it's an awesome jacket for the money :thumb: :thumb:

It's a lesson well learned.

jeepnGS make sure you get a helmet that is both snell and dot approved!

That's a pretty controvercial point there...many people feel that SNELL standards are bull$hit.  IMO, get a good quality helmet from a reputable manufacturer that is at least DOT approved.  Before you buy...RESEARCH on the net.

I was wondering how long it would take for that to come up.  There are articles here that discuss the standards and that a DOT aproved helmate, in everyday street riding, protects your head better that a snell aproved helmate.  This has to do with the forces transfered to you skull.  I'll look for the article, its actually interesting.

humph... its hot and im not stunting, im just cruising to my grandparents following my parents a few miles up the road.  not that makes it any better.  i was trying to help out others who havnt been down.  btw, this isnt the first time ive been down, but its the worse.  i low sided a 636 at the dragon about a year a go but had a jacket and gloves.  i was only going like 40mph though so that helped but i still broke my collar bone.  and i know better than most that if you dont wear the gear youll get skinned up.  i dont like being called a squid because i didnt have a jacket on.  squid implies a lot more that just that, but since you guys know it enough to throw it around i wont bother with spelling it out for ya.  i also speak out agianst 3/4 helmets.  if i didnt have a full face, id have no face.  i guess the guys on cruisers dont plan on going down, but neither did i.

damn, those pictures look painful.  Definitely makes you think about the false sense of security that jeans offer.  I finally bought a proper pair of textile pants this spring and I have worn them every day out since.  After looking at those pics, I am pretty sure I will wear them every day in the future too.

Do you have an idea what your speed was when you went off?

+1, just like my MSF instructor said, in 60%-70% of cases where a rider is thrown over the handlebars, the first impact is going to be you chin area or face.  That was enough for me to get a full face helmet.

i was behind my parents so i was going probably 55-65mph.

man, those pics are scary. I only have a full face helmet, but I need to find some pants too.  So, are you gonna get another bike or are you done? Just curious. If you can get back on after that you are better than me-it would probably take me a while to get back on.

Don't get mad about generalizations only to make one...

I ride a cruiser...  I always wear full-face helmet, motorcycle jacket, motorcycle gloves, and motorcycle boots...  Although, I've ridden 4 times without boots (Once on the cruiser)...

I'm glad you're trying to help other riders remember ATGATT!

Too hot to wear gear == Too hot to ride.

Glad you made it...   :thumb:

My buddy that crashed at freeway speeds had two spots of roadrash...  One little one on his knee... And one freaking huge, nasty one on his ankle.

His jacket was TOAST, but his riding boots were unscathed...  Since they were sitting at home in the closet.  :icon_rolleyes:

My jacket is totally f%&ked :icon_confused: but better it than me :icon_mrgreen:  besides I think I'd rather heal than have to break in  a new pair of jungle boots    but seriously if I had been wearing boots and my leg armor i would have walked away from this....,straight to the ER because my hand was hideously misshapen :o but I still would have walked instead of still having a limp 4 days later from the soreness and road rash

didnt you say something about going over the top iof a hill and then it all webnt to hell?  if that was the case, could it be, 1 either involuntarily did a small wheelie? or hit a slick spot at teh crest of the hill? lost ass end traction and it went to hell after that point?

ive ridden a couple of hayabusas both stock and streched and didnt like either of em, theyre too big.  and i dont think i did a wheelie or lost traction.  ive dont enough wheelies in my day to know how to save one.  there is a small blood spot on the ground a few feet before the gash and blue paint, so the coppers think i hit a cat or somthing small enouth to be thrown so they couldnt find it.  and yes, i rode yesterday as a matter of fact.  the guy i work with who i sold my 500 to let me ride it, and my friend gavan let me ride his tt600.  it killed my hand from clutching and it started bleeding real bad so i had to get off.  and yes, i wore more gear than i thought possable lol.
