Title: Avoid Panic Brake Swerve
Post by: MrDan on May 23, 2007, 01:11:13 PM
Just came across this on the SV board.  Didn't find it here but even if it's a repeat, good stuff to think about.  Written by one of the Hurt report authors.

That is a great article and should be required reading for all motorcyclists.  Especially younger ones!

Very nice article  :thumb:  defensive/evasive riding, especially on crowded city streets ,I liken it to a game of chess ,in that you have to foresee your rivals and own moves or else you'll get a checkmate :icon_razz:

That is a good read, good find :thumb:  I agree that most newbs should read as much as they can about keeping safe and riding safe but its unrealistic.  People will not do that simply because they think they can learn more by doing than by reading a short article that may make you aware of things previously unknown to them.

That was obviously aimed at the cruiser crowd...

It carries over to all M/C crowds though ... I noted the part on "Loud pipes save lives" too , as well as referring to people only using back brakes (WTF??!!) , but I think the article was found on the SV forums

Yes, it does carry over, but it was obviously targeted at the cruisers. Taken seperately they wouldn't mean as much, but taken together I thought it was pretty obvious.
7) No booze before riding. None. Ever.
10) Don't lay it down.
11) A loud exhaust is not safer.

I didn't get that impression.  Especially the laying it down part.  Not even sure I understand the physics of how you'd lay down a cruiser.  Wouldn't it just sit at an angle with all that metal on the side?  Too damn wide to actually fall over  :icon_lol:

And yes - was posted on the SV board .. but originally from mag called Motorcycle Cruis ..... uhhh ...

nevermind

That's how I knew it was directed at cruisers.  But it definitely applies to all

good read... definentally aimed at the cruiser crowd, but still some great tips. Best tip I can give is basically what they said - ride paranoid!  :icon_twisted: Assume every car on the road IS out to get you (some days I wonder...) and ride accordingly.
