Title: Small issue with starting...
Post by: kilmer on May 23, 2007, 08:22:05 PM

So, I started the bike after it sat for a year or so.  I flushed the fuel tank, replaced the plugs, changed the oil, replaced the battery.  Before I did all this (except the fuel flush), it started with some issues, and would stutter along until it eventually would die out after a few minutes of idling, which was also kind of hard to get it started at first as well.  So, the issue now, is that it won't crank over, and if it does it only idles for a few seconds then dies out.  I figured the carb needs cleaned out, but the spark plugs have fuel on them when I pulled them after a crank over try.  So, am I not getting any spark now?  These are brand new NGK's the irridiums (NGK DPR8EIX-9) which I read about in another thread.  Any thoughts?

crank it over with the plugs out, sound like your cyinders have filled with fluid(fuel) if ti won't turn over. Why?, not sure

what will that do?  fill it with more fuel, since I'll be removing the spark plugs completely?

so, I bought a set of Champion Plugs that are recommended for OEM use on this bike (off the top of my head, I forget the exact PN#), and it still won't fire.  Should I remove my carb and clean it out?  Is there a way to drain excess fuel from the carb?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Theres A Drain On The Carbs , I Believe

yeah there's a drain at the bottom of the carbs should be a phillips head screw facing outward.    removing the plugs if you have fluid in your cylinder will allow the engine to turn over without causing hydrolock and damaging not only the bike but potentially other objects or you.  After a few turns the cylinder should flush out enough to re-install the plugs and crank :thumb:

So, replaced the broken coil and got full spark now!!!  But, of course ran into another small issue.

One of my fuel lines developed a small leak (I did use fuel lines and not just vacuum lines) so I replaced it, went to start the bike and no go.

Yes, I have them routed correctly as per the guide and this diagram:

I was looking at this diagram and my bike doesn't look exactly the same (1992 GS500E is mine, not sure what model year this is).  My screws are on the inside not directly on the outside like these.  I drained them anyway.

(I have the choke on when starting)  Seems like I am not getting enough fuel...any suggestions?

If your drain screws are facing inwards then you haev the carb bowls on the wrong carbs. I don't know if this will hurt anything or not but you won't be able to easily drain the fuel.

Haven't touched the bike since the last post (been working on my car)CAR PICTURE (http://www.pittspeed.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=68153&g2_serialNumber=3), went out and started it up.  Fired right up.  Got a little higher idle then I'd like, sounds like in the winter I will be rejeting it and cleaning out the carb.

It was fun riding it around the city today though...Can't wait to take it out on some back roads and enjoy some twisties :)

Your picture's too small for me to tell.. but if your drain screws don't face the outside, your float bowls are on the wrong carbs.. this will cause issues. Correct it.

What kind of issues will it cause?  That picture I took from Wiki.  I can take some of my bike to post...
