Title: Fundies say the darndest things
Post by: Egaeus on May 25, 2007, 10:09:09 AM
It's a website.  And it would be hilarious if it wasn't true.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"No, everyone is born Christian. Only later in life do people choose to stray from Jesus and worship satan instead. Atheists have the greatest "cover" of all, they insist they believe in no god yet most polls done and the latest research indicates that they are actually a different sect of Muslims."

People are so stupid it is sometimes downright comical. Most of the time it's just sad.

"I often debate with evolutionists because I believe that they are narrow mindedly and dogmatically accepting evolution without questioning it. I don't really care how God did what He did. I know He did it."

I'm just past #50 and it's getting difficult to read. A lot of them are just downright funny.

Here, I'll make up my own.

"It is my belief that all fundamentalists are just trolls looking to get a reaction out of the masses. No one could honestly and truly believe all the things that fundamentalists say are true, which means that it is a logical assumption that they are simply trolls, be they on the forums or in real life."

HA HA HA HA. IS IT TRUE?!

bad deal

I know I have been there, age 2 to age 15, hard core fundamentalist upbringing. No TV, movies, radio/pop music, or parties... hardly even any hanging out. I went to church-school, wore a shirt and tie 6 days a week, went to four (3-4 hour) church services a week, no t-shirt or shorts in public, had to read the bible every day... comic books got tossed in the garbage... as did my GameGear TV Tuner and portable TVs I bought, and transistor radios I found... my sci-fi fantasy books...

Life in fundamentalist Christianity is a true dreamworld, the real world being only a backdrop for their biblical/apocalyptic/christian fantasies. I sometimes have a recurring dream where I wake up and I am still there... at my present age... just never having left.. just stuck.

better to grow up in it and escape it than enter it as an adult and be sucked in for life. They fill their ranks with desperate, lonely, fearful people who need surety and certainty in their lives, even if what they are sure of is that the world is ending very soon.

fundamentalist christians are not so far off from fundamentalist muslims. They are all headfocked, albeit on the whole, they are people like everyone else. I know a lot of them take the church thing with a grain of salt.

Thank God I escaped from there... fock!

Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian (I'm sure this could be adapted to fit other religions fairly easily)

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, someone rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

2 - You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

There are a lot of things I have concluded to be wrong, without studying them in-depth. Evolution is one of them. The fact that I don't know that much about it does not bother me in the least."

You hit the nail on the head.  I can deal with religious people.  It's the fundies that just boggle my mind.  Some of those quotes may be outrageous and possibly spoofed, but there are plenty who believe it.  Just read the context.

What's really frightening is that a lot of that sounds familiar... My sister suffers from schizoaffective disorder, which is basically all the fun of bipolar disorder with bouts of schizophrenia mixed in. She stopped taking her meds a month ago because she was starting to go to school again and didn't want the side effects to interfere (plus, as anyone with a mentally ill relative knows, none of them actually believe they have a problem when the medication is working).

Currently she's been involuntarily committed, but if you talk to her for a few minutes she sounds a lot like the people in those quotes.... She has all sorts of wacky things about how satanists are trying to force her to take poison (i.e. court ordered anti-psychotics), how they're trying to kill her baby (incidentally she is pregnant with the second coming of christ), how she can't do certain things because god spoke to her and told her it was wrong, how my mother is possessed by evil spirits seeking to destroy her, etc.

Of course my sister is, at the moment, totally insane. Makes me wonder how many of these 'fundamentalists' are actually mentally ill...

I'd say quite a few.  I have an uncle in a similar situation.  From the descriptions of his behavior, he's textbook paranoid schizophrenic.  He's not paranoid about the government; he's paranoid about going to hell.
