Title: Anybody near Los Angeles have a motorcycle that I could borrow/rent?
Post by: Egaeus on May 29, 2007, 01:58:28 PM
It's looking like The Company may be sending me to LA in the near future for up to a few months.  I hear good things about some of the roads outside of LA, but the entire length of interstate 10 is a bit far to ride.  I'm personally not interested in paying >$100/day for a cruiser, and that seems to be the popular rental/price.

Would anyone happen to have a spare bike (preferably a GS or something close to it in power/handling) that I could use for a modest fee and/or free minor weekend mechanical work (with your tools, they're too heavy to bring)?  I'm particularly good with GS500 carburetors these days.  ;)  I would happily sign a contract to repair/buy the bike if wrecked and/or give you a refundable deposit. :thumb:

I'm looking for max exposure, but move it if necessary, mods.  :icon_razz:

No.  I figured I'd try here, then some friend's friends.  It's a long shot, but I'd really like to carve some canyons at least once while I'm there....

I've got a 97 gs500 which I can't get to run right. I am about to walk away from it, in fact.
I'd be happy to let you use it for a while, if you thought you could get it running right. It's black, and has about 9000 miles on it. .
There are some things to be worked out (expired tag from last Fall, which I can remedy, insurance issues for you, etc). Maybe you could just buy it outright if you wanted. E-mail me--   thingsbuilt@yahoo.com   -- and I'll tell you what I think is wrong with it (probably the carbs)

I won't buy it!  That is, unless I wreck it.  You need to enjoy it before you sell it!  :icon_mrgreen: But I will fix it, or at least give it my best shot. :thumb:  I read your past posts, and it doesn't sound too serious.  Question: do you have coffee filters?

I believe that I should know tomorrow how long I will be in LA.  It's either June 17-30, or June 17-September 29.  Either way, I'll do my best to get out there and get you going, and if it's the long stay, I'll hit you up for a ride or few.

I'll email you sometime this weekend about the insurance etc. once I know more about my schedule.

Hehe.  The question is, do they have a bike that they'd be willing to let me ride.  An extra bike would be good, because then I'd have a riding partner, though I'm pretty boring to ride with according to my friends.

uhhh... I dunno about riding my bike... but I might go riding with you and show you a few places....

And I'm contemplating doing the annual LA Area GS500 ride again this year... I dunno if I will, but I might.

That's cool.  I will know very few people there (just the people I work with, most of which I don't want to hang out with) and nobody who rides.  If I get a bike, I'll take you up on that.

By the way, what is there to do in LA for someone who doesn't give a rat's posterior about Hollywood?  I'll take a picture of the sign to say I was there, but that's about it.

oh man... there is a TON of stuff to do here, especially outside of Hollywood.... But you should hit up the Hollywood scene and respect it for the tourist trap that it is....

There are TONS of awesome museums.  The Getty and the lesser known Getty Villa.  The Museum Of Tolerance usually has some AWESOME speakers talking, including Holocaust survivors for tour Guides.  The beaches are great for relaxing.  Santa Monica Pier is pretty touristy and has some street performance type things going on....  The LA County Coroner's Office has a gift shop called "Skeletons in the Closet" thats pretty fun to go to for souvenirs to take back home...

When you're out here, I'll make it a point to meet up with you and get you a copy of a book "Not For Tourist: Guide To LA" which has tons and tons of stuff to do in it that isn't always mainstream.

Oh, I didn't doubt that there was anything to do, but I don't know anything about LA except for Hollywood.  And if I don't see a single actor, I won't be disappointed.  I watch and enjoy movies, but I don't care about the actors.

I definitely need to get a copy of that book.  Thanks for the offer.

California, here I come am!

So I almost had a wreck coming out of the rental car place.  I pull out and some guy pulls out of his parallel parking space.  What a way to start driving in LA... :)

I hate driving in L.A. Everyone seems so on edge all the time, day and night. It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there again!  :cookoo:

Did you ever find a moto to borrow?  :icon_mrgreen:

I didn't find one besides thingsbuilt's.  I'll hit him up when he gets back from Mexico.

Or I could rent a Harley.  :icon_projectile_vomiting:

Hey man hit me up if you want to grab lunch or something, I'm down in SD but can take off work no problem (I work at www.buymoto.com, so my riding schedule is very flexible) and come up to meet or something.

Always down for a good reason to ride up the coast, or thru the desert.  I have parents/little brother in Beverly Hills, so if you got a moto, I'd come up for a ride and crash at their place, then roll out the next morning or something.  I don't know the area very well, so I can't help much with stuff to check out besides the Encino Velodrome (if you are into that sort of thing), and the Promenade in Santa Monica with the nearby beach/pier.

I'm always up for lunch, but only on the weekends.  I'm exhausted at the end of the day, and I even managed to get sunburned today.  I plan on spending most of tomorrow indoors (ouch!)  I haven't seen crap yet except for driving through Chinatown to get to our site.  Well, that, and the smog.  You don't truly understand the extent of the problem until you see it for yourself.  Driving on the interstate (210?) I saw the exit for Beverly Boulevard, and started looking around to catch a glimpse of Beverly Hills.  All I saw was a vague outline of hills through a brown cloud.

And motorcycles splitting lanes still catch me by surprise.  They aren't really going that fast, but they're still fast enough that I have yet to catch one in my rearview mirror before they're there.  Believe me, people aren't trying to kill you, they just don't see you.  Jeez!

splitting lanes isn't as bad as you think.... it becomes second nature.

^to the splitter...not the splitee.

Title: Re: Anybody near Los Angeles have a motorcycle that I could borrow/rent?
Post by: TragicImage on June 20, 2007, 08:23:49 PM
not even for the splittee....

I just know that I need a good 5 seconds to looking in the rear view mirror of the direction I plan to go, with plenty of signal time....

The rest is up to the rider and the gods.

Smog is worse in the summer, but it's a whole helluva lot better than it was (in general) 10 yrs ago.

Still, to this day, you'd be better off sucking air out of the tailpipe of a Honda Civic (not the Si model, but the other, lower performance models) than breathing the air present around Pasadena.  No shaZam!, man.

That's why I like SD so much, less traffic, less congestion off the freeways, less smog, easier to get "out of town", more beaches, cheaper to live by the beach, etc etc etc.

What about renting a trailer to bring the GS there?

1.  I wouldn't need a trailer, it fits in my truck
3.  I'm already here.
2.  Are you crazy?  Have you ever driven 2250 miles?  :icon_mrgreen:

No lane splitting here...

I have this recurring vision of that coinciding with another phenomenon I've seen often- a car driver opening the door to dump the unused portion of some drink out onto the pavement.

Never seen one look back before doing that yet.

Well, my gear finally arrived.  Now I just need a bike to go with it.

I didn't remember to pack any tools, so if you want work done, you'll definitely need to have them.

Hey, you have MBD.  Maybe we can go ride.  I'm a pretty sedate rider.  And I want to see a V-strom up close.  I'm seriously considering one.  I'll shoot you an email sometime tonight after I get back from dinner.
