Title: what would you pay for this bike?
Post by: debtman7 on May 30, 2007, 05:49:13 PM

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-GS-1991-suzuki-gs500e_W0QQitemZ110132940381QQihZ001QQcategoryZ133177QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It's about 1.5 hours away, about all I can find. Not crazy about the color but I can hand it off to the wife and keep my candy red :) I'm tempted to bid $1200 and if someone outbids me, so be it. Not sure it'd be worth more than $1200 but I don't know.

You can look up the "Blue Book" value of that make and year according to your area...  www.kbb.com and www.nada.com will give you different values, but you can get a basic idea...

Then you add in the "How badly to I want it" value.

It's the beginning of prime riding season...  Bikes always cost more this time of year.

Blue book values are hard to guage... Nada says $750 for a 93, kbb says $1600 retail. Pretty wide gap. Not too many have been sold around here since I bought my 96. I think it'd be worth $1200 if it's in good shape, but no idea if it would be worth more. I'm not in a huge hurry, but I'd like to pick something up in the next month.

Hmmm, I wondered if it was someone here, he posted a for sale over a month ago and it was olive green, this one's metallic blue. Maybe he painted it...

Can't really drop by to take a look, it's nearly 2 hours away. $750 nada value seems really low, I never see a bike that doesn't need some work sell for less than $1,000.

From the pictures it looks like a possible repaint (not sure those "gs500 stickers are original").  Plus the clutch and brake levers have been "modified" (and not in a good way IMO).  I don't ebay, so I don't know what the whole "winner will pay $300" is.  I would say that if you pay $1200 and are able to ride away you'd be doing alright, but $1200 is the absolute max I would pay.  I would try to get the guy to meet you half way, so that you both drive 1 hr.   If he cant' ride the bike a hour away you definitely don't want it, or he could trailer it, which would still let you get a good look at the bike before you buy it.

Any way you go, good luck to you. :thumb:

I think its cheap , the paint work and the cheap stickers let it down , otherwise , i say , if it doesnt go over 1200 , its a complete bargin

I think maybe it is the same one allone posted here, I asked a question on ebay and said it was repainted two weeks ago. Also said it has rust in the tank which means it would need kreemed or replaced right?

$900 plus shipping. it's a pre-95 or whenever things got alot better, and it's not stock paint.

add in the little things that people always neglect, and it's a $900 bike.

I think I'll pass, said he redid the paint himself plus something about float bowls. I've got time to be patient, plus it's a bit of a drive.

things haven't changed much in all the years, and nothing I can think of anything that changed in 95... brake caliper maybe :dunno_white:

I bought my '90 for $500 last year.  I knew at that time that I had to replace the fork seals -- tires -- brake pads etc. etc. etc.  Chances are, you will have to drop a few hundred into it regardless.  I think the starting bid of $1200 is way-over-the-top!  That person must love that bike, they are going to have it for a very long time at that price.

It's ebay... most things are overpriced there

But for all I know, it is a reasonable asking price / starting bid.  I've never seen the bike in person, so I can't judge it

Most bikes that are in the small category would be 1500-1800 if they are good mechanically and decent cosmetically.
Medium is 1700-2200 and large is 2200 up usually.
So I'd say 1200 for good mechanically and OK cosmetically is prolly a decent price.
Cool.
