Helmet - I really like my head

Leather Gauntlet Gloves - like my hands and wrists, they're likely to hit first, gauntlet style won't come off so easy

Textile or Mesh Jacket - Don't want road rash, Leather is too expensive for me right now

Motorcycle boots - Also very likely to hit first or get stuck under bike, protect ankle, won't come off easy like tennis shoes or even work boots

Jeans - Cause I'm too lazy to put on overpants, and didn't like the pair I tried.  But I know I'm taking the risk of rash on my legs and should get some

Tour Master Venture Air mesh pants, or Tour Master dxs jeans

Cheap ass stanely steel toe, steel shank work boots from payless

-Helmet (mandatory by law around here), lift-front type...very practical, I'm in love with it :icon_mrgreen:
-cordura jacket, kinda waterproof, with detachable inner lining (for cold climates) and elbow/shoulder/back protection (detachable too);
-gloves with back/knuckle protection, bike specific;
-blue jeans (ok, shame on me for not wearing specific overpants,  :nono: I'm consciously taking the risk of getting road rash too)
-boots, not bike specific stuff again, but high above ankle ;)

In addition, I have a rain suit (jacket + pants + over-gloves), but due to the very small inexistent seat compartment I can't take it away with me...so I just store the pants in the large pocket on the back of my jacket ;)

Usually a brain bucket for helmet, flip flops and a thong over my 300 lbs rear. :o
Kidding, thank God for anyone behind me!!!!
I use HJC flip face , Joe Rocket armored Mesh jacket, Leather/Carbon fiber gloves, jeans :nono:, Steel toe high top work boots for ankle support, and on long rides , a kidnet belt for back support.

HJC CL-SP lid with a nice mirror shield (i live in florida)

Joe Rocket leather gloves.

TourMaster Advanced Sport (textile with a little armor)

Heavy-assed leather Timberland work boots (steel toe)

Dockers (I know, that's less than optimal)

rain suit from wallyworld when needed (in the saddlebags)

I programmed my cellphone with 4 ICE numbers you know, just in case.

I have a signed 'consent to operate' self-made form in my wallet, don't know if it's legal, but hey.

seems like motorcycle pants are the first things to go.....I'm often guilty myself

really wish someone would make some good, very lightweight, very breathable pants with armor inserts.

I have knee/shin guards from Icon, but they still aren't perfect, and leaves my thigh and tushy vulnerable to road rash.

FirstGear's HT Air overpants sound like they would fit your bill perfectly!  They come with armor in the knees and have pocket ready for hip armor, but you have to purchase teh hip armor seperately.

Helmet: Icon Mainframe, decent, but pretty loud.  I like my brain, and my face doesn't need any help in the ugly department.
Jacket/Pants:  Joe Rocket Alter Ego.  I do not recommend it.  The stitching has needed to be repaired.  However, it's what I have for now, and I like not being scarred up.  I don't ride without the pants.  If it's too hot to wear them, it's too hot to ride.
Gloves: A* GP Tech.  I like being able to write, type, and grasp things.  No complaints, except that the gauntlet can't be tightened much.
Boots: Oxtar TCS.  I like being able to walk.  Only complaint I have is the unbelieveable squeaking.

Helemt Arai Corsair. . .why because it matches my bike.

Jacket #1 Joe Rocket Phonix. . . why becuase I didn't have the money or knowledge about perf leather

Jacket #2 Vanson Huricane perf leather jacket. . .why because leather is the best protection you can buy

Gloves A*'s SP-1's . . why full leather. . used to have mesh / leather gloves

Pants First Gear HT Overpants . . .why because I have a short inseam and it's very hard to find short inseam leather riding pants unless you get them custom make and that would be more money than I have atm. . . .I do want to get some tho.

Boots Icon Field Armor boots. . why because I have wide feet and most companies don't make them.  Icon doesn't either but these were wider than others that I had tried on.

I also have Bon Armor underpants with full ce armor, have not used those since I got my overpants.

The reason why I wear all this gear is because of my son.  If i get into an accident I wan't to push the odd's as much as I can in my favor of surviving.

as for myself, since i do not currently own a bike my gear stash is small. HJC full face helment. i bought it to take my safety course in.  i have an older "harley style"  leather jacket, ya know, the one with the buckle round the waist? lol. my wife says it looks trashy so i bought a newer leather jacket. it's real leather, not imitation but it doesn't have any armour or anything like that its just a normal jacket. no gloves yet. the ones i wore to my safety class were some cheap walmart knock-off looking BMX style gloves. they served their purpose but i wouldn't use them on the street. i own a pair of Georgia Boot Company steel toe work boots. i just bought them 2 weeks ago cuz my Brahmas were done for. the new boots have good high ankle support so i will more than likely wear them when i ride. i wear jeans all the time, i'm not a shorts kinda guy unless i'm swimming.

I've got the full compliment of Space Marine armour. From top to bottom:

Shoei RF-1000 Helmet. I knew virtually nothing about MC helmets at the time of purchase. It was plain silver, fit well and was on sale (though not cheap). As things turned out, I had picked a winner.

Dainese (Wave 2) Back Protector. Who doesn't love their spinal cord? Those stringy little devils are rarely appreciated until they get damaged, so mine gets the cockroach shell before the odds decide it's time for me to go down.

Dainese (?) Textile Jacket. Covered in zippy pockets, reinforced with shoulder/elbow/forearm armour, striped with Scotchlite and blessed with a zip-in liner, this jacket takes me from 2 to 35 degrees Celsius. It flows air pretty well when the liner is removed, in case anyone is wondering.

Dainese (Atlas) Gauntlets. Like the helmet, I knew little about the brands, was looking for textiles and October sees decent sales on apparel in Toronto. The gloves have reinforced knuckles, velcro closures and are otherwise unremarkable.

Dainese (D-dry) Pants. They zip into the jacket, feature a removeable liner, knee/shin armour, hip pads. The calves are zipper-split for easier dressing. The shin armour is shortened (a nice touch) so as not to interfere with the most amazing pair of...

Frey Daytona (Sport Easy GTX) Boots. They were the only boots that looked good at the time and I snagged the last pair (odd size, but fit me perfectly) on the shelves. Carbon fibre armour, broad Scotchlite reflectors on the heel counters, the works.

Why you ask? Pain hurts and I don't need to become any uglier than I already am.  ;)

I went and spent up about $1,000 BEFORE I got my bike - like others, I too like to type, pick things up, walk on my feet, etc...  :thumb:

Helmet - KBC VR2 Airborne, with Blue Iridium Visor
Jacket - Teknic Chicane Textile Jacket (Too hot for Leather)
Pants - Jeans  :nono:. I'm still yet to find anything that fit/comfortable. I've got tree trunk legs. Actually, like the tree stumps after the trees have been logged..... Looking at Draggin's next...
Boots - DriRider Nordic. Again, due to fit.
Gloves - DriRider Drimesh. Very breathable, leather, carbon fibre knuckle protection. Looking to upgrade to something in the AlpineStars range - I value my hands greatly.

That said, on the odd occasion when I am only travelling 5km up the road, I'll ditch the jacket, jeans and boots for shirt, shorts and runners...  :icon_rolleyes:

Dry Weather:
Helmet: AGV Rossi Replica (need to change it now though its looking abit worse for wear)
Jacket: Frank Thomas perforatted leather jacket with armor in the back, shoulders and elbow.
Pants: Frank Thomas perforatted leather pants with armor in the hip, knees and then knee sliders also.
Boots: Nitro unsure of the name but they have carbon kevlar armour in the ankle and toe and plastic reinforced armor on the outside of the toe.
Gloves: depending on temperature and weather i have some ventilated kevlar buffalo gloves with carbon fiber armour on the knuckles. and large ventilation on the fingers. In the cold i have some unnamed waterproof cold weather leather gloves.

Rain:
Alll of the above but with an unnamed two piece over suit, just goes over everything.

Commuting to School when i have to wear a suit:
I wear textile overpants over my tailored trousers and then just put my shoes in my school bag and change at school

Shoei RF-1000 helmet
Cortech GX-Sport jacket
Alpinestars SMX (hot weather), SPS (moderate) and Belstaff 'gauntlet' style (cold weather) gloves.
Aerostich AD1 overpants
SIDI On-Road boots

---
The pants are great for commuting but I really need some different ones for just riding.

The weather here in Cali is usually moderate to hot and the jacket has a bunch of vents on it to keep you cool but when you close them up, you stay nice and warm. I haven't had to use the quilted liner yet. I hope to in the 'winter'.

I end up using all of my gloves at one point or another due to dramatic temperature changes. The SMX ones are really breezy so only good for hot-very hot weather.

The boots are awesome. Sooo comfortable and look good under pants at the office. Can definitely wear them all day for walking, etc... but they get a bit warm.

The helmet is good. Nice and light with mediocre venting but very good aerodynamics.

HJC full face hemlet

Alpinestars boots

Alpinestars leather and mesh gloves with carbon knucke guards for hot days and Joe Rocket full guants for regular days.

NJC leather jacket with CE elbow and shoulder protects.

Helmet- Shark RSI

Boot- Steel toed ankle high boots

Backprotector- Joerocket Speedmaster

Gloves- Kobe proracer.

Leathers- one piece tracksuit called kobe X-pro. Extermely good valvue in regards to quality only thing that could compare was $1000+ tracksuits by dainese. Thought about a two-piece but its too easy to not wear pants so I went with the one piece. It is an execellent suit in terms of build quaility with 1.7mm thick leather and I think dainese and the other guys use 1.3-1.4mm leather and only paid like $589 for both.
Few people have reviewd them some of them crashed at the track without any holes or tears in the leathers.

HJC CL14 - It's no Shoei, but I gots a big noggin and a small wallet. Sue me.
Ducati Race Rep jacket - It's a ripoff, but it's decent quality leather and has CE armor. Plus it looks the fun bags.
Icon Anthem pants - Icon can be pretty squidtacular, but these work for now.
MotoGP flyer gloves - Cheap, good looking, comfy.
*Cough* Wolverine Boots *Cough*

Helmet: Arai Quantum or Shoei Platinum RJ
Vanson jackets: perf  with armor for summer, Comet with liner for winter, waxed cotton touring jacket for riding in the rain
Vanson pants:  perf Traveler with armor for summer, Route 101s for winter
Boots: Bates Fast Lanes, sport or touring
Gloves:  various, favorites are Aerostich  Elkskin tourers

Yeah, this stuff  cost more than my bikes but I have always subscribed to the adage "If you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet".  Plus, if you buy high end kit, it lasts.

It's funny. I did a lot of research just before I bought the GS. When it comes to protecting my one and only body, money's not a huge object for me, so I was going to go with the best stuff reviewed over at motorcyclegearreview.com. That means all Motoport customized gear. But talking to experienced riders, I got the opinion that you can buy good off-the-rack stuff for about 1/3 the price but which protects just as well. So...

Late fall/Winter/Early spring:
- Shoei RF-1000 helmet (solid white for visibility). I was going to go for the X-11 but this one fit so much better.
- Originally had a Cortech GX-Air mesh jacket, but that got ruined when I dropped the GS at 50mph
Now have a Cortech Coaster air perforated leather jacket and love it
- Generic over-ankle steel-toe workboots
- Roadgear multi-season gloves
- Originally had jeans, but didn't appreciate the scar on my knee after the crash.
Now have Cortech Venture Air mesh overpants

Alternatively, I use a "Spartan" one-piece riding suit that my uncle gave me (after giving up riding) when it's really cold out. Has anyone ever heard of this brand? I can't find any mention of it anywhere...

Hot months:
- HJC CL-15 helmet (hey, was an extra $10 along with the mesh jacket and it's well vented)
- Joe Rocket mesh jacket (can't remember offhand which model)
- Cortech air mesh gloves
- Hi-tech just-over-the-ankle hiking boots

Am i the only power ranger rider so far? Im blue ranger which one was that?
Title: Re: riding gear
Post by: vtlion on June 09, 2007, 05:25:33 AM
I would say I qualify for 'power-ranger' status:

Shoei RF-1000 with blue faceshield (except, of course at night when I use the clear shield)

JoeRocket Blaster 3.0 Jacket (blue) (formerly Alpinestars TZ1)

Teknic Violator Gloves (blue)

JoeRocket Ballistic 3.0 textile pants (black)

Oxtar TCS race boots (blue)

Teknic 4-plate back protector (for those longer rides)

When commuting, I dump the boots in favor of my Lowa leather trail boots.  It is a pain to walk around all day (or even part of it) in boots articulated for the riding position.

I decided to go with the JoeRocket gear because of cost.  I know that some people complain of quality concerns with JR, and they are right.  However, you get what you pay for, and I chose JR to get the leather at the lowest cost.  If that means treating my gear with kid-gloves to keep it in good shape, then so be it.

The pants are reasonably well constructed, but the velcro closures on the leg zippers are poorly attached, and I fully expect to be forced to sew a few back on over the next season or two.  The jacket, however, feels very sturdy, has an excellent venting system, and only really suffers from a few thoughtless design elements in the wrist closures.

I am not particularly JR loyal, but I bought pants and jacket together because I wanted them to zip in to each other.  I feel a lot better on the highway knowing that my jacket is less likely to hike up on me in a slide.

Update on my riding gear list...
Yesterday I went shopping and came home with a new helmet (Nolan N102 N-Com, full-face front-lift, grey) and jacket (Suomy nylon perforated jacket, black&red).
I decided to do this because my helmet was quite falling into pieces (...it's fairly annoying to get into a road bump and see your visor come down all at once by itself like a guillotine, huh?), and because my present jacket is definitely not suitable for hot days (and I don't pretty like the idea of riding with only a jeans jacket on :nono:).
I took'em both for a short test ride, and whoa!, helmet is really another world, you can open the front with two fingers, it has air vents, anti-fog supplementary visor, detachable sunscreen...a bit costly, but now I'm set for some time :icon_mrgreen: ;jacket...double whoa!,so cool, so light, very practical...the only thing it lacks is an integrated back protector. Next to come. :thumb: :icon_mrgreen:
Anyway, today after lunch "I'm taking a ride with my best friend" (can you hear the Dave Gahan in me?    ), so I'll see better how they behave.

That's how my co-workers describe my riding gear. I'm either the Blue Ranger or the Red Ranger depending on the weather, except when it's raining (I don't think there was an orange ranger). I seem to be a glove packrat and collect those so I won't bother naming them all; here's the rest of my gear.

Helmet: Scorpion EXO-400.
Jackets: Cortech GX Air (hot weather), Tour Master Transition (cold to medium weather)
Pants: Joe Rocket Alter Ego (hot weather), Tour Master Caliber (cold weather)
Boots: Wolverine construction boots (the only part of my riding gear that isn't "real motorcycle gear")
Rain suit: orange Frogg Toggs

I prefer not to spend weeks worth of earnings on my moto gear but I have to say, the Shoei RF-1000 was worth the $330 I paid for it from helmetcity. Fits like a glove, quiet, streamlined, classy, quality.

Jacket: Fieldsheer nylon (cheap, warm, vented, not the prettiest, but works)
Gloves: Joe Rocket summer gloves (nice fit, some padding, did not prevent hairline fracture, but they're not bad)
Boots: Sidi ankle high street style boots (pretty good once broken in, tough leather, light, not quite street shoes but close)

Im looking for a new jacket soon, preferably one with clean lines and leather, open to suggestion.

Hands:  Icon (I can't remember) Gloves - Fit pretty well, cheaper than most, look sweet
Wet/Cold Hands:  Cold Front Carbons - Fit well, Cheap, Warm
