I need a gas tank for a 500E. it does not have to be perfect. All I ask for is no rust and no holes.

I have a great tank ... I have somehow wandered into a way of fixing tanks if they aren't too far gone. This one is coated inside, welded and patched outside on the side that goes toward the inside - invisible under part and is rust free, dent free and in the original 89 black with red and white pinstripe color. All paint and decals are intact on the outside - faded and weathered but intact. I have a black body that is almost the exact match of the tank in terms of weathering so we can trade that whole lot if you dont want to paint.
I would want a undented and un bondoed but rusty and holey tank and cash in trade.
How is $125 and a tank with rust and/or holes ??? I'd like a pic too before I can send you pics in a day or 2 as well.

Why didn't you tell me you patched gas tanks!Dam it!I got an 89 tank that has rust through at the back,close to where the seat meets.The cat I bought the bike from,fiberglassed the tank.I thought about cutting the bottom out,cleaning it and patching the holes.I have no welder tho.Maybe we should get together and work on some stuff.
You cant cut it on the outside. I cut them on the under side. Then hand inside and sand and patch with thickened POR 15. That is if it just has pin holes. Larger holes will need to have the thing cut off and figured out. Its also very very hard to weld tanks that were thin to start with and rust can make them much much thinner in spots.
I have a tank I cut the crap pockets on. Its not done yet. Lets hope it gets done ... than I'd have scaled a new height for fixing a tank. For now, pin holes are all I can fix.

Yeaaaaaaa ummmmmm.My tank will have to be cut apart,cleaned,patched and brazed back together.I can do it with an oxy acetalean torch.Glad he put an 04 tank before I bought it.Holds more gas.
You put brass ... usually you'd melt the underlying steel cos its so thin and porus. Thick sheet metal will be fine, but why are would thick sheet metal be a problem.

I have seen it done on other tanks.The person I seen do it had bout 40+ years brazing.He put heat to the metal to get it hot.Then he put the flame on the braze rod and flowed the brass in like solder.He was keeping the metal just under red hot.I have also seen people cut and patch tanks back together using JB Weld.Never tried on a fuel tank,but I patched a cr50's engine side cover.I was never around the person much that used JB Weld on their tank to find out if it worked.
I've been patching mine with "QuickSteel" It works good so far!

Ya know,I just bought some of that. ;) I used it today to patch a tub spout that I can't find anywhere. :icon_rolleyes: Damed old house trailer. :mad: Be glad when I find a house under $200,000 that I like,and can pay for. :icon_confused: Maybe,I should go back to work full time. :dunno_white: Nah!To young for that. :laugh:
