I'm 180 without gear and I have Progressives in the front. I have my Kat shock set to 3 pre-load and 2 rebound... It's set for comfort, not racing. At high speeds, it tends to swim a little. If I click the rebound to 3, it's better at high-speeds, but it bunny-hops a little at slow speeds (not as comfortable).
I imagine that a pre-load of 6 would shatter your spine. The Kat is a lot heavier than the GS, so 3 on the Kat shock is kinda like 6 on the GS shock... (Scientific, Wild-Ass Guess).

The bike is taller
How much taller? This is something I'm worried about...

Yeah I just did fork springs and oil, same as you. Now all i need to do is get a rear shock and I will be set.
If you find a setting you like let me know. I'm just a couple pounds heavier than you and have .85 sonic springs up front. I had the Kat shock set at a preload of 6 too, because that got my sag just about right. Rebound set to 3. It's harsh, but it's bearable on normal pavement. I was riding on some broken pavement recently and it was horrible. I got the filling loosening shaking and it felt like the rear end was floating over the ground. I've just dropped the preload to 5 and will give that a try. Any thoughts on if upping the rebound will help? Theoretically it should just affect the rebound damping and not the compression damping, correct?

Keep in mind this is just a S.W.A.G. on the height change... Mine
seems to sit about 2" higher when I'm not on it... But, sitting on it drops it about an 1" or so... So, it's not
much taller, but it is taller.
It may be coincidental, but I started having problems with my wrists shortly after I switched over... I had to change my riding position slightly to compensate for what felt like a higher rear-end.

My problem is that right now I use AJ's bike as a daily commuter..her stock shock is completely blown. We got her a Katana shock, but I'm really short and I'm afraid that if we switch over, I'll no longer be able to reach. As it is right now..I'm barely getting both toes down. Certainly not enough to feel overly confident about it...I guess we'll have to swap and see if I can reach, and if I can't we'll have to switch back again until I get my bike back.. :dunno_white:
The little dial (rebound) is SOOOO easy to adjust, I tend to screw with it depending on my mood.
2 is more comfortable and better for bumpy roads and 3 seems better at higher speeds and when I'm really flogging it.
It's not that hard to swap it out... Swap it and see how it goes... Or... Ride without the seat. :icon_razz:
Umm my 350 has no padding..just 1/4" piece of foam on a metal plate...no thank you  I'd rather ride on that than the gs with no seat at all...
im 180 with gear on a good day, what would a good starting point be for me?
I think 3 pre-load and 2 rebound... Then work from there...
I've found that too much preload make the bumps overly harsh... So, you can lower or raise accordingly... And too much rebound tends to make the rear-end "hop" off of bumps... Again... Adjust accordingly.
Quick... Someone post the guide to adjusting your suspention!

I had a better time with it... With the old shock, it was a little low for me. :dunno_white: 32" inseam.

OH! Yer crazy! :cookoo:
Its good to see people figiting with their suspension.
When racing on Brainard International Raceway(known for its shittty tarmac) I have my Katana shock on a rebound of 1. You want the tires to really conform to the road. If you start pogo sticking around corners and such then thats when you need to increase dampening.
As far as preload, you need to check you sag to figure out how much you have. You want to shoot for 20-25mm of sag. Measure from the centerline of the axel to a vertical point, I usually use a peice of panters tape for such marks. The less preload the more sag you will get, and the more preload the less static and free sag you will have. So get a friend and have hime take the vertical measurement on the bike, then sit on the bike in a normal riding postion, putting your full body weight on the bike, then have your buddy take the measurement again and record the differnce, this difference in height is your sag

I walk it around too...I can't reach well enough to sit on it and move it..even with the stock shock. AJ sits on it...
but who has to put it in and out of the garage and move it around tight spaces..yeah thats right me..
I don't remember too much of a difference in height when I switched to the Kat shock, but I also replaced the 80 series tires the PO had put on with 70 series so it kinda balanced out.
