Title: super-choke!!!! -- idle above 4k w/ choke on
Post by: krypto35 on June 05, 2007, 06:37:52 PM
super-choke -- idles above 4k w/ choke on -- everything else seems fine though - carbs are synced, no air leaks/miscellaneous sucking, idles perfectly even at 1200 without choke after about 30 seconds warm-up.  Not a throttle cable binding, not *large single* idle screw problem - it is set correctly.

flabberghasted.  Is it normal w/ the mods I have done?

Other things bothering me: Shitty dead spot in throttle about 6,000-7,000 RPM at full throttle in every gear - bike surges and hesitates but won't accelerate until I back off throttle a bit...... research stated that dropping the needes would correct this, well... my factory pro needles are as low as they can be adjusted to (clips in highest position) and it hasn't changed a thing -- maybe incorrect taper??

Float Bowl levels Dead ON at gasket, and fuel screw out about 3 turns ea.

PLEASE MAKE SUGGESTIONS!!!  ... planning on bringing the needs back up one notch, as that seems standard with my Mod and setup.

the high idle with choke is normal :icon_rolleyes: it means the bike is warm enough :thumb: as for the rest......you'll just have to play with your jetting......welcome to the GS500

don't know if its normal, but with the choke all the way on my bike idles above 5k. I put it all the way on to start her up, then back it down to about half to warm up.

can't really speak to your dead spot.

Bike may just be warming up quicker due to the warmer days and not need as much choke (assuming you are in the northern hemisphere)

What size main jets does Factory Pro specify for Stage III?  Dynojet needles, for example, require much smaller main jets than the size 150 a restrictive stock needle with shims can handle.  But, if that narrow dead spot is the only problem then it could just as well be a lean symptom, so raising the needle could be the answer.   :dunno_white:

the factory pro kit was practically a waste of money.  it came with 37.5 pilots and 142 mains - both useless for the upgrades even though the kit was specifically put together FOR a V&H exhaust and K&N Lunchbox -- the only parts from the kit I used were the adjustable needles and replacement bowl screws.  it was very dissapointing, but thank goodness my local shop even-traded me my unused jets for their "correct" size jets (40 and 150 according to matrix).  So the bike should be set up correctly according to input from many many others who have done the same upgrades.  But I can't seem to improve this anomoly in the power band around 7k which should be directly affected by needle position.  I didn't think to switch back to the original factory needles and use the washer-shimming method -- maybe a project for tomorrow, because at this point I feel that the taper of the needle may be incorrect even though they're supposedly made for mikuni jets.

:icon_confused: You didn't even try the Factory Pro kit?  My point was that adjustable kit needles are not interchangable with stock needles when it comes to matching them with the optimal jets.  The "jetting matrix" is a DIY work around for the stock needles and, in this case, the matrix' 150 MJ is not the "correct" size for the Factory Pro kit.  I don't suppose your local shop will trade you back your FP jets now so, yeah, there was a waste of money. :icon_rolleyes:

i tried the kit and the bike ran very lean - hanging revs, popping, back firing -- Factory pro rep said the needle tape is the same as that of my stock needles.  micrometer said the same.  switched back to stock needles with jetting matrix jets / techniques and still same symptom of dead spot at 7k

so, nah  :nono:

any constructive advice yet?
