Title: Rattle
Post by: powrful1 on July 25, 2003, 10:25:08 PM
I have an clanking sound....kinda like two coins rattling.  It mainly happens when I am at high speeds, been out for a while, and in a left hand turn or with the wind leaning ever so slightly into it (left).  I can't for the life of me figure out what it is, I have looked at everything on the outside and can't find anything loose....the sound could also be described as a loose bolt with a washer rattling....and assistance would be great.....I have  a 02 with now 900 miles!

Hopefully you had the 600 mile service done (dealer or indy mech) which includes retightening miscellaneous bolts (they have a tendency to loosen)...If you're checked the bolts that are visible and accessible from the outside I'd pull the sprocket cover and check the front sprocket-thats all I can think of on the left side that might make a noise like that (but what do I know?). Noise might be there all the time but you only hear it when leaning to the left...

What rpms are we talking about here also?

Also check engine case side covers, engine mount bolts for looseness...etc...

mid rpm, it almost sounds like it is up front somewhere around the front wheel....I have checked the bolts there and nothing I can see, and yes I have 600 done at Suz center.

I might just take it in there and say hey, I don't want this back until the noise is gone.

If it sounds like coming from front check the bolts holding the fender to brace and brace to forks...those are notorious for coming loose.

I did find one on the front finder loose....went for a test ride and still there.......grrrr.

I have been a little weary of riding since I know something isn't right, but so far nothing bad has happened!

Try to check your fuel tank and make sure it is properly mounted. I am missing the stock spacers and it will rattle around 5,000 rpms. It is a very annoying sound.

It's the fuel tank. I've got the same problem. Not really a problem, just an annoying damn buzz while I'm trying to enjoy putting my life on the line at 10000 rpm. While trying to be the god-sent mechanic, I lost the two spacers at the front of the tank and the two on the side. So now I get this lovely clank/rattle noise. Don't fret, it won't do anything but drive you insane.  :guns:

If you go to the For Sale/For Trade forum, at the top is the Sticky for Preferred websites for Parts and Stuff.  It's Parts 411 and Parts Depot.

Also, it may not do it as badly in some gears as it may in others. Mine is moderatly bad gear 1 (I can live with it) but particularly bad in gears 2,3 (bugs the crap out of me) but I rarley notice it in gears 4,5,6. It also depends how hard you lean on the tank, if you take all your weight off the tank it does it really bad, but if you put weight against the tank it wont do it as bad.

Here's an easy one: check your keys.

I know it sounds silly, but I have 3-4 on the ring and they will end up in a spot where they rattle on the handlebars. Drove me nuts for a bit until I figured out what it was.

I once replaced the bearings on my 260 Z to get rid of a squeak that turned out to be the hubcaps.

i think i have the same problem.  but my buzzing noises happen when i apply the front brakes HARD, when letting off the throttle at high RPM's,  or when i make sharp turns.  come to think of it -it even buzzes when i'm at a stop light  turning the wheel left or right.  might it be that little mudguard rubbing against something?

i'll take it off when i get the chance and post the results...

I am thinking it might be in the bearing department now....yeah I to rattle a little with my key....female end of one of those clip to other key rings but I can hold it still and still hear something.

I doubt its a bearing. They usually don't rattle, they either screech or click when they fail.
Go thru the bike with a torque wrench and tighten stuff. A couple of years ago, Lita's bike started making a rattle at 5 to 7 K rpm.  I took the thing half apart until I found one of its case guards was broken at the mount and was vibrating against the engine.

Also have you checked you drive chain tension?
This will sound weird, but when our GS's chain gets loose, for some reason it starts making a pin-ball machine sound on the clutch side. :?
