Just ordered some woodcraft Clipons.  what is the best mounting position?  Above or below the top plate?

if you have an E - below.

If you have an F - above if you want to keep the fairings without modification but you will have to put new springs in the stock forks to keep the seals from wacking the lower triple.  If you remove the top triple plate and mount the gauges some other way you probably won't have to upgrade the springs.

Heres pics on mine on my F, mounted above the top plate
